WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New U.S. claims for jobless benefits rose last week but the underlying trend pointed to an improving labor market, while regional factory data showed the economy gaining momentum as the year ended.
The growth picture was brightened by other data on Thursday showing pending sales of previously owned homes jumped to a 1-1/2 year high in November, adding to signs of a tentative recovery in the housing market.
Indications the economy was wrapping up the year on a much firmer footing than had been previously anticipated leaves it better positioned to deal with headwinds from the festering debt crisis in Europe and fiscal tightening at home.
"The data have maintained their stronger tone and that suggests the economy is on an upswing towards the end of 2011, but they are not pointing to robust growth in 2012," said Conrad DeQuadros, senior economist at RDQ Economics in New York.
Looks like Barry will get his second term. Republicans will do anything to downplay the improvement of the economy. So classy

Didn't you try this nonsense yesterday and get shot to pieces? I guess when your a lefty keep screaming the same thing over and over again and hopefully others start agreeing is your usual strategy. Good thing we're not all blubbering swooning lefties around here!!!

It is not gaining momentum! Now, granted that gold's gone down over a hundred an ounce and this is definitely a tad puzzling, but it, too is temporary like the bounce from the Holiday season has helped prevent some layoffs, and gave some temp. jobs.

What is happening is that Sears is closing more than a hundred of their stores, Kmart ones included, and on the very island that BO is vacationing on two large hospitals are closing and laying off almost 1,000 folks and that's a lot for a small island such as Oahu.

Tax time is coming and sadly, we're probably about to hear about some more retailers closing facilities, with more layoffs.

The lefties will be touting hiring numbers and not even realize it's due to the holiday temp hires. Or more likely they will but squeal away anyhow. Then when the UE numbers jump once they're laid back off they won't make a squeak. This is what the swooners consider a "recovery". That's how sad it's become.

Default that's a pretty big leap of faith

I read the article and the predictions are tepid at best, with lots of qualifiers and modifiers.

perhaps if you are going to troll you should get shinier bait

As I said in the thread the OP opened on this same exact subject a couple of days ago...

The bump is from holiday hiring, the housing market is going nowhere fast.

Slow growth is certainly much more welcome than what the Repubs desire, no growth.

HILARIOUS!! New jobless claims ROSE, but all is well!

And the housing market?

USA Today: 'Weekly Jobless Claims at Lowest Level in Over 3 Years' | NewsBusters.org

The Op appears to be a "headline" scanner as well.

Quote:
In fact, the Department of Labor reported that for the week ending December 24, the non-seasonally adjusted number of initial jobless claims shot up by more than 69,000.
See, this is what the obama-media is ALL about - creating headlines about a robust recovery to "help" obama when the FACTS don't support their assertions.

The linked article delves into the real costs of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, and why it holds back job growth. It is interesting how our President could sign this law, which by its very complexity, will add significant costs for private employers, in turn sucking up funds needed to create jobs. No amount of campaigning for more legislation to create jobs can change this reality.

Obamacare Prevents Job Creation
The article is an eye-opener for those on both sides of this argument. Please read before commenting. Here are some excerpts from this article.

"Mercer, (Note: Mercer Health & Benefits LLC is the gold standard for health and benefit consulting firms), estimated that when the law is fully implemented our health-care costs will increase about $18 million a year. That would put our total health-care costs at $29.8 million, a 150 percent increase from the roughly $12 million we spent last year."

"My point to them was this: Everyone has a stake in job creation. As far as I am aware, no one in Washington -- Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative -- can achieve their goals unless our economy prospers and creates jobs. Washington needs to understand that legislation like the health-care law has costs as well as benefits, that the costs suppress job growth, and that when too much legislation kills too many jobs, everyone suffers. "
