I for one do not think that Iran will follow through on their threats to the shipping lanes. If they do actually threaten ships and block their paths or worse? Obviously we all know what the US Navy will do.

So do we just scare them off or do we damage their navy enough to the point where they are no longer a threat?

Lets see. Iran doesn't appreciate sanctions and responds by closing a strait that is partially under their sovereignty and people think Iran is the aggressor.

I am not sure why some people think that nations will bow down to our wishes when we slap sanctions on them, despite the plethora of historical evidence that shows otherwise.

Regardless of what people think-if Iran tries to block oil ships the US Navy is going to sink it. They are talking about breaking international maritime laws even if part of the strait is under their domain.

I'm just wondering if we spank them or really kick their butts.

We have imposed sanctions on Iran (which is an act of aggression on our part)do you really think maritime law matters to them?

If they block shipping lanes we (and other countries) will enforce protection of shipping lanes, which will result in Iranian boats/planes going to bottom of Persian Gulf.

The only threat to Iran proper will be coastal launch sites of SA and AS missiles, and perhaps command and control facilities.

Is it "we" or is it the international community and the UN security council? I admit I'm not an expert in these matters.

Iran should simply cancel those non-proliferation treaties and officially develop an atomic bomb. At the moment it doesn't matter if they are already doing that or not, the West has decided they are, anyway, regardless of proof or lack thereof.
That whole issue is the cause for all the saber rattling and sanctions...
Actually, the whole world should get or develop atomic bombs, so that the bullying stops.
