Looks like the US underestimated the power of the Egyptian military.
Their pro-democracy funded groups over there are coming under the eye of the Egyptian government.

The military doesn't like these foreign funded groups and are raiding their offices and cracking down to stop the civil unrest.

Sometimes that grass isn't greener.

And here's the funniest part..the US is funding the very army that's cracking down on them to the tune of over $1 billion per year.

Can we get any more stupid ?

U.S. Embassy shelters Americans amid Egypt NGO crackdown - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/u-embassy-shelters-americans-amid-egypt-ngo-crackdown-171743321.html - broken link)
The unusual step of offering U.S. citizens diplomatic refuge follows Cairo's crackdown on non-governmental organizations, including several funded by the U.S. government, which saw travel bans imposed on six American staffers including a son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
..
Leading U.S. lawmakers have also voiced outrage over the incident, and American officials have repeatedly warned that Washington may have to take a fresh look at U.S. aid to Egypt's military, which now runs about $1.3 billion per year.

The money is connected to the 1979 treaty. They have to actually violate clauses within that for the money to be cut off. So all the US politicians can do is give lip service at this point.

....said a "handful" of U.S. NGO staff had sought and been granted permission to remain on embassy grounds after they were barred from leaving the country.
If they are American citizens, then the only to bar them is to arrest them.
