Another case of America's intrusive foreign policy apparatus sticking its nose where it simply does not belong...

US Embassy in Guatemala Criticizes Legalizing Drug

Quote:
The embassy says Washington opposes such measures because "the evidence shows our shared drug problem is a threat to public health and safety."

Yeah and then watch the border of Mexico and Guatemala turn into a free for all of anarchy and violence, almost like where Mexico is heading to right now.

Only difference is that they can't blame it on the US and Americans.

Well our war on drugs has been such a thriving success, why would anybody ever dream of making it legal? We've got this thing licked!

They are, but all we have to do is control our borders and enforce our laws, both immigration laws and the laws on what gets brought over the borders. As it is, we keep the drugs illegal but allow the cartels full control over the border and we allow them to bring tons of drugs over every day.

Let the Guatemalans wallow in their drugs all they want. They'll be cutting off each others' heads with all that legal methamphetamine.

Yeah, we can't even keep prisoners from OD'ing on drugs.

That's an odd what to characterize it.

What, exactly, do you think the purpose is of having an embassy if not to convince the host nation to conduct its affairs in a manner favorable to us?

You don't think the Guatemalan embassy in this country isn't busy lobbying our government to see things their way?

We're talking about a domestic Guatemalan policy that would involve changes in the country's local criminal code.

Imagine if your state was considering a law relating to zoning or some other local affair, then a foreign embassy went to the media with a press-release badmouthing your local zoning board, and warning them against the proposed change.

I'd assume you'd rightfully see that as an unwarranted intrusion.

Please. These banana republics stick their noses in the business of the USA on an almost daily basis. Mexico has also suggested the legalization of pot. But pot isn't the principal drug "problem." It's harder drugs. Synthetic drugs. If the drug addicts in the USA would stop being so damn selfish there'd be so much less suffering in the world. There wouldn't be a war in Mexico. Our prison population would be halved.

The addicts are the ones suffering, primarily. There would also be no war in Mexico if drugs were legal, any more than there is a war in Kentucky between Jim Beam and Old Crow.
