Imagine if we were 20 years more advanced in stem cell research , the Catholic Church didn't condemn the use of condoms in places with astronomical rates of HIV infection, there was no killing in the Mid East, and we had the contents of the library of Alexanderia. Religious wackos have hindered the advancement of the human race by at least 1000 years.

Imagine if we lived in a world where people could accept different beliefs and opinions.

I respect your right to your belief, but that doesn't mean I have to accept it.

Eugenics.

Religion isn't perfect, and it has caused a lot of harm, but there are times when it has done great good. Usually the good that religion does is on a small scale, one on one basis, small scale is where religion does its greatest good.

Why do you ignore the role of government or adherance to a political ideology in hindering advancements in society?

The more we have worked to move "forward" and "progress", the more this world has gotten absolutely turned upside down.

With that said, I wonder how better we would be as people if we didn't call others ugly and hateful things?

No no, but without a moral compass, generally associated with some kind of religious belief, then eugenics would be followed more closely.

Many see religion as a big organized thing. I oppose organized religion because of the harm it causes. But personal religious beliefs, developed after years of study and personal retrospection cause far more good then harm.

eugenics in the form of killing the mentally ill, weeding out the physically weak, etc.

I do believe that was what the OP was talking about, you see "big government" in the hands of religious nut cases who insist that evolution is only a theory and that creationism is the true science, who make up some god derived opposition to stem cell research or basic research that they are clueless to understand is... well big government.
