Everyone has carryon luggage and/or a handbag. I don't put much jewelry on when travelling, but do carry it in my carryon. Anything that I have to remove, along with passport and tickets, go into my handbag (mini handbag??), as does my husband's watch, wallet, keys, etc. At least if there is any question after going through the scanner I have to be the one to open my handbag/carryon in front of security.
I always leave lag time between the person in front of me so that when I go through security I'm there waiting for my carryon and handbag coming through the scanner. I've had security get annoyed with me for "holding" up the line for all of about one minute and I told them why - to make sure that nothing gets stolen and no one walks away with my goods.
I always take off my watch and rings, and they aren't cheap. Never had a problem. I thought you were supposed to remove them. I don't know if you have to take them off or not, but next time, why not ask the agents?
And I have to say, I have trouble with your story.... if they were missing, why not get the police involved. They're all over the place in air ports.
Now that I remember it, the TSA agent knocked over my bin once I put it onto the conveyor belt (but before it went through). Once I saw that, she was putting her feet in front of my rings, nearly standing on them and playing dumb, claiming she didn't see my rings at all.
