I know that conspiracy theories have been around forever-- but why does it seem like otherwise normal people are now so willing to believe them? Not just absurd, disproven birtherism, but Breitbart, 9/11 "Truthers" and others?

The theories are outlandish and disproven, but they continue to believe? Is it education? Is it cognitive dissonance? Why are these otherwise intelligent, educated people choosing to believe the unbelievable.

Are they going to insist that these tin foil hat theories are taught in schools as an "alternative" like absurd intelligent design theory?

::FEAR::

What does Breitbart have to do with this?

I think it was all started with the "Passover Plot". Not the book, the event.

What's hilarious is the liberals go around claiming "debunked" as if this really means something and people should stop discussing a subject. People can go around and claim "debunked" all they want but it does not mean there is conclusive proof that everyone can agree too.

So in essence ... your "debunked" has been "debunked"

the birth certificate conspiracy is debunked...breitbart isn't yet (though it's a pretty retarded and paranoid theory). 911? that's not fully debunked at all...

Usually because its another way of helping them continue to justify another belief they have, whatever that may be.

For instance, the Kennedy assassination. Its been pretty well debunked that there was more then one gunman. Science, trial and error, etc has proven that Oswald could, and probably did, assassinate Kennedy.

But, it helps those who are distrusting of the government to further their belief, without logical reasoning behind their distrust.

People who don't like spending money on space travel, believe the moon landing was a hoax, etc.

The theory is being kicked around that Breitbart was killed by the government for being a pest... People watch too many Jason Bourne films..

Perfect example ....

The fraudulent birth certificate has not been debunked. The evidence just released by Sheriff Arpaio ... was just released and it was preliminary information released. The Sheriff has much more information not released to the public.

In actuality ... the Sheriff proved the Obama birth certificate is fraud. That is not a theory and the conclusion is backed by real experts in PDF format.

Actually Don, I hope you guys continue with the birtherisim louder and more proudly than before. I think you guys-- instead of stopping discussion-- should expand the discussion.

It's a great way to help Obama get reelected. It's so marginalizing that many won't vote for a Republican just to disassociate themselves from the nonsense.
