Okay, so most of the discussion lately about government provided health services has focused around the need for better medical care availability in America.

What about dental care? If you've been to a dentist lately, they are very expensive. I'm currently in a lot of pain waiting for my benefit at my new job to kick in Nov 1 as I can't afford to go drop $800 right now. And dentist do not treat patients who can't pay, or at least none that I can find will, lol.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone here that supports government takeover of medical to also go ahead and take over dental while they are at it. I'm very mixed in my opinion of the medical, and hadn't thought about dental previously.

I believe Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants dental care along with his universal health care package.

Its not that far of a stretch as periodontal disease is believed to lead to an increase in risk of heart disease, stroke, and also have other negative effects on health in general.

I don't think the government should be paying for cosmetic procedures in general, but some issues related to mouth health are very related to the rest of the body.

...interesting idea. I know Halliburton does some drilling. Perhaps they'd make a reasonable bid on a federal contract..?.....

I think that if government wants to cater to the special interests of corporations and business.. rather than the people.. then they need to step up and provide a national healthcare including dental plan for everyone... If they are going to allow businesses to not provide it.. and allow them to pay low wages like they do.. then the government has to step up and provide it... you can't have your cake and eat it too... (as I've said before) because then hard working americans lose... I start to wonder.. if we never had gone to war.. how much of that money could have provided a healthcare system for everyone?

Aw, fer-cryinoutloud...must we really think about federalizing everything?!

How long will it be before we have federal mandates about when/how often to brush your teeth, how to blow your nose, and the amount of TP you're allowed to use per wipe?

Will somebody pleeeease get the freaking federal govt's nose out of our daily lives?!?

having the government in our lives to regulate actions are different than having the government in our daily lives to insure we have access to medical services... especially people who don't have it because they can't afford it due to businesses not providing it.. and paying too low of wages for people to pay for it on their own... don't confuse the two...many countries have parallel systems.. where if you wish to purchase private health care on your own accord.. then you are able to do such... and doesn't TELL you you have to use the national system.. but it is a moral issue as far as I'm concerned... that EVERYONE is able to go to the doctor and dentist... anything less is unethical.. and wrong... even if it doesn't effect YOU...

I'm not for nationalized healthcare yet, as I haven't been convinced that the government will provide better care cheaper and I'm skeptical about how they would use a system like that to raise taxes anytime they want.

What I am interested in knowing is if they are gonna go so far as to take over medical care, it seems dental falls into the same area and only makes sense that it would be a blanket program that would cover both.

I share your skepticism.

Looking at examples like government-run housing, government-run schools, government-run charity (welfare), government-run retirement (socialist security), and the government-run post office, the conclusion is easy to draw...

If you want something to be a huge waste of money AND a colossal failure, just put the government in charge of it!
