I work in DC and live just outside of the city. While DC is doing good overall, the low income folks aren't doing so good. Have family that have been looking for a job for months.

I'm employed, but have been looking to find a job closer to my home. I have a degree and over a decade of experience and I don't even get calls for interviews. Luckily, it's not a matter of survival for me to find a job, because the competition is pretty stiff these days. You have lawyers applying for paralegal and admin jobs. Folks with graduate degrees taking entry level gigs.

And you don't have to drive an hour outside of DC to find the poverty and/or unlucky ones. Just take a couple of "wrong" right turns in any neighborhood.

It's still the economy, because the only reason this area is doing well is the Federal Government. And most of the so called deadbeats can't get in the Feds. I spent 2 years applying to hundreds of federal jobs. Never even got an interview. I even applied to a Career entry program with my top choice of agencies. There were 10,000 applications, many with Ph.Ds, military experience, years of professional work experience, etc.

My friends in the Federal Govt say don't even bother, you can't get in anymore unless you're military or overwhelmed with experience and education.

This is so not true.

My friend's daughter is two years out of college with a degree in English. She has been working for a private company for those two years. She just applied through USAJobs for an editor position at the GS-13 level. She was ranked in the category of "best qualified" and resume has been sent to the hiring manager. Interview to come in 2 weeks. I'm actually confident she will get the job.

She knows no one at the agency, has no point of contact, nothing. Just a well-written resume and has the exact skills they are looking for.

I will definitely agree that it is not easy to get in and part of the problem is that many of the skills requested are specialized and governmental. Many people preparing their resumes have no government knowledge and don't know how to make that private experience translate into something that the resume reviewers and hiring managers can see as relevant.

It sometimes really helps to consult with someone on your resume when you are trying to get into the government as they can help you with those issues.

So according to you the DC area is doing well due to the Federal Government. And you can't get in the government unless you served in the military. Both statements are true to an extent.

Thus Conservatives need to quit slamming gov't workers as worthless leeches unless they are willing to slam our veterans.

Bull Pucky in the highest degree.

Approximately 75% of the federal workforce is NOT a veteran.

Quit reaching.

OPM: Veterans
Well then 25% is alot of so-called gov't leeches from the military. Add that on top of the military itself, and no group of people are taking more from tax payers than our veterans.

Interesting USAjobs work. I've heard mix reviews about the site.

So the government doesn't want to hire unqualified people. Simply amazing.
