But tweeting a naughty word outside of school hours? And someone had to go to the trouble to FIND his potty-nouth tweet.

School expels student for swearing on Twitter during non-school hours | Technology News Blog - Yahoo! News
The parents or legal guardians of this student should have employed the "F Bomb" as they reprimanded the school.
When parents institute their own "No tolerance" policy with nonsense such as this we may see things get back to normal.

How the hell do they expel somebody for an F bomb? Do these folks not go to football or basketball practice? Hell the coaches are dropping more than the kids are. This is beyond insane. Expelled? Yeah lets ruin a kids future because he said the F word.

not on school time, and the word was not used to descibe a teacher or administrator. it is none of the schools business. the school should be sued until they do not have anymore money and then sue the administrators that expelled him for violation of the students 1st amendment rights.

neither expulsion nor suspension should have happened.

I find this awful hard to believe... One thing's for sure, if I was those kid's parents, I'd scour the country for the BEST lawyer and sue the HECK out of that school and school district. And everybody knows that all school districts are loaded with ca$h - with some of the deepest pockets you'll find anywhere.

Those parents need to sue, sue and sue some more - at least by the time they're done, they and the kid will be set up for life.

Well the schools are taking more responsibility for raising the kids. They feed them, sometimes clothe them, teach them about life and throw in a few academics inbetween. Sooner or later they extend to watching the kids outside of school hours. Looks like the "sooner" is now with this school.

And folks are upset ? Why..you WANT the schools to take over for the parents in social education.

OK I found a little more detail. This article says he used a school-owned computer to post the tweet.

WTF? High school senior expelled for swearing on Twitter

Student suspended for profane tweet

I'm still not seeing how the tweet itself was such a big deal.

Even that is absurd. I could maybe understand a day of in-school suspension if he had told a teacher to f*ck off, but he was using it as an intensifier, not towards anyone, let alone a staff member.

People said f*ck all the time at my high school. I heard my principal use it all the time. I think along as the intent isn't malicious, and it's kept to twitter, the hallways, lunch break, it should be okay. If kids are banned from swearing ever at all, they never learn when and how to use a swear word appropriately.

At my university, professors use it in class in sign language--both variants--the middle finger and the sign deriving from having sex. Not saying it works for all schools, but life does go on at my school despite swearing. It's not like we're all rude people with no consideration for others, but there are just different cultural standards. I would never say f*ck in a hearing school though cause I know it would be much more shocking.

Students need to learn what's acceptable within their community and culture. When is saying f*ck appropriate? On twitter, off school hours off school property? Appropriate. With friends at lunch or after school? Appropriate. During class? Inappropriate. Towards a teacher (anywhere, anytime)? Inappropriate. It's about making good judgement calls. Expelling kids willy-nilly doesn't teach them wise judgement.

I'm sure people go on Twitter/Facebook all the time at school--including staff.

Was it during class?
