Do you know about the law they recently passed in San Jose? We now HAVE to bring our own bags, or pay $0.10 (sometimes $0.15) per bag... it's taken me a while to adjust, but I'm getting better at remembering my canvas bags. You know what chaps my hide, though? I used to re-use those grocery bags for garbage, recycling, dog poop, etc - and now I've near run out of my supply!

It's always interesting to see someone pull out the checkbook.
Yeah, that's a rare sight these days! I got stuck behind this older woman at Walgreens recently, who was using a checkbook - and couldn't figure out how to write the check, let alone produce the needed ID. After about 5 minutes of this, I turned to the person behind me and whispered "Has she ever heard of a debit card, for crying out loud?" Even I have my patience limits, LOL. Usually the SNAP people are quick about it, especially now that they have their own debit cards.

IKR? I'm kinda creeped out now, thinking people are watching my every move at the grocery store, doctor's office, etc... and I'm not even on govt assistance, so I can only imagine how it would feel if I were!

Also, I might be looking at what they purchased! Yes, I look at what people purchased! Not because I want to see if they are using WIC, but because I love cooking, food and am often interested in what other people find for dishes. It's nice to discover new products by looking at what other people buy and that is why I found it odd to think about how I wouldn't glance every now and then at what people purchase.
I'm a woman, and I do occasionally glance at what people are buying - not to judge them, it's just hard NOT to look sometimes (although usually I prefer browsing the trash mags).

I rarely pay attention to how people pay, though, unless it's holding me up like the example above. Just tonight I went to Wal-Mart, and quickly switched lanes when the couple at the register started going "Can you put $150 on this card, $50 on this one - wait, try this one instead." Oh hellz no, I'm not waiting for all of that nonsense.

I was recycling them, but now I've resorted to hoarding, just in case.
Did you hear what SF paid to have a wild manzanita bush uprooted? It was thousands of dollars, when you can buy a starter plant for under $20. CA sucks.

Btw, I've asked you at least twice now to offer logical suggestions & solutions for fixing this problem - why can't you answer me?
Anyone can see exactly what you said. Stop crying.

My solution? Revamp the entire system. In fact, get the damn government out of it altogether. However, for bleeding heart excuse makers such as yourself, let's say the gubmint stays in the business of keeping the poor poor. (BTW, we have been throwing money at the poor for DECADES! Guess what? It doesn't work! They are STILL POOR! Hey, let's keep doing THAT! ::eyeroll: )

If someone comes in for "assistance", there should be serious checks on what they claim. Track down how much they make. Track down how many kids they actually have. Track down what assets they have. Track down if they ARE LEGAL in the first place. If they aren't, instead of throwing OUR tax dollars at them, deport their law breaking asses. Cut welfare off after x amount of time so that people aren't living on welfare their entire lives, abusing the system because they are too lazy to work. As with unemployment, make them look for work as a condition to continue receiving their welfare, (and WIC IS welfare whether you wish to admit it or not), for that x amount of time they are allowed to be on it. The list goes on and on.

Then guess what would happen? Those people who actually DO need it can get it instead of being turned away. What's that, you say? People are not turned away? Oh yes, they are.

Some examples of the PROPER USE of government assistance were given throughout this thread. There have been people who needed help TEMPORARILY. That was what it was supposed to be, TEMPORARY, not your ENTIRE LIFE. MAKE it temporary, check them out thoroughly, if they're illegal, get them out of this country, no anchor babies either, require them to look for work as a condition to continue receiving welfare for the allotted amount of time they are on said program.

Of course, you will make even MORE excuses as to why that can't possibly work because bleeding hearts always find lame excuses to continue keeping the poor down. As another poster mentioned way back towards the beginning, they will continue to live in poverty, they will continue to have a low standard of living, they will continue to live in bad neighborhoods but I guess that's what you bleeding hearts want for them instead of truly helping them by making them GET OFF of welfare.

"But, what about those with BABIES!!!!!" Hey, if you've been on welfare and have had more than two kids, you are TOTALLY abusing the system. Neglect is not looked upon so kindly by the law...time to put those kids in a better home where they might have a damn chance at life instead of living in poverty or being taught how to lie, steal, cheat and manipulate like their parents who abuse the system.

There ya go. There's your answer. Oh and Emeraldwhatever, put that in your non solution pipe and smoke it.

If you think that is bad, try getting stuck behind someone paying with a check. These people **** me off. Either pay with cash or use your debit cad, it is not hard.

The worst part about it is that they wait until the last minute to dig for their checkbook. Seriously, wtf? At least get your checkbook and pen out beforehand.

Why all the fuss?
The taxes that fund socialist insecurity and all those freebies are voluntary.
If you don't know how you volunteered - well - you should ask your public servants to explain it to you.

Simple truth:
You were endowed with rights by your Creator.
Government job #1 = help secure those rights, not tax them.
Government job #2 = govern those who consent.
Consent waives job #1.
Remedy #1 = withdraw consent, restore rights
