Btw, interesting discussion... but does anyone else find it ironic that we're lamenting "disconnect from the real world" on an Internet forum? Hehe.

I don't want to be plugged in. I even take a break from the web every once in a while, just to get away from the chatter.

Its amazing that no one seems to post on threads that actually matter such as this one. Most of these other threads are jibber jabber for people that like to debate ridiculous issues. Then there threads like this that actually show the cause many of our problems in todays society and no one wants to post. That goes to show you what people are really interested in.

There will absolutely be 12-step programs for these devices in future years.

If you think it's bad, have you seen 12yo kids glued to these things? It's messed up.

Really? Smart phones are the cause of many of our problems in today's society?

Smart phones are tools - that's it, just tools. We are now living in the Information Age and you will either learn how to use the available tools to access and manage information or you will get left behind. The Luddites of the world can complain all they want, but we're never going back to the way it was...we march forwards, never backwards.

This is getting downright absurd!

On a recent trip to a restaurant where the workers prepare the food in front of you at your request, while waiting in line, I noticed nearly forty percent of the people standing in line typing away on their smart phone.

It's gotten to the point where many people live in their own little fantasy world brought to them by their smart phone. Women and teens seem to be the biggest culprits, but there seems to be an increasing number of men now joining this trend.

Has life been narrowed down to a several inch by several inch box? Nothing is unique about these people and their "aps", "Facebook" (why in the world do people care about broadcasting their life to the world, day-in and day-out (very immature, in my opinion)?), text messages, and Twitter.

It's as if these individuals are weak-minded, weak-willed, and need a constant stream of entertainment and bells and whistles lest they get bored with life. In general, they're a weak lot, in my opinion. They're definitely not the type of strong-valued and strong-minded people who conquered the west. After all, if smart phones existed prior to many other inventions, nothing ever would have been invented if everyone were always on their phones. These people, I figure, spend nearly half their waking hours on these gadgets.

Do you find yourself shaking your head when you're out to eat at a restaurant and you note a couple and one of the two are on their smart phone, totally ignoring the other person. Do you find it disrespectful when these type of people have no problem carrying on a loud conversation on the phone in such a setting. In general, it seems that people are disengaging from REAL LIFE.

How do you feel about these modern changes to social life?
I agree, and I would like to add the lack of manners that goes along with it and cell phones in general.

People in the supermarket(I go there to buy food) who stand in the middle of the aisle checking their phone, totally oblivious to others.

A few weeks ago I was at the local supermarket at the pharmacy section, there was a young woman standing at the drop-off window.

I thought she was waiting for the clerk to assist her so I got in line behind her, after a few minutes I noticed she wasn't being helped.

She had been looking down the whole time, it turns out she wasn't in line at all.

She was just checking her phone, again another one completely oblivious to how her behavior impacted others. She didn't realize or didn't care that she was standing right in front of the pharamcy drop-off window.

If they're so intrigued with their phone when out in public, then go stand off in a corner and get out of the way of poeple who actually go to the store to........shop.

Smart phone have turned everyone into zombies. Look around. They are a brain numbing tool that people get addicted to. Yes some people use them for work, most play games and waste their time. They are needless tools. Are you that important that you need a phone for everyone to contact you? Other than an emergency I do not see one good use for them.

ANd just so you know backwards is better in some cases...look around

I'm in my mid-30s. I started the thread. Does that make me an old fart, too?
