You should check out a college campus. A considerable number of people basically plug their ear buds into the jack of their phone and basically listen to music on their way to and from classes. Also the amount of checking on Facebook and Twitter updates is constant with some people.
I remember when my daughter was in college, we sent her to a private, Lutheran college in Minnesota. We went to visit her during her freshman year and walking through the main campus during the day and I was amazed at how quiet it was.
When I went to college in the early 80's I remember campus as being a loud, vibrant place. It was during the boombox era with loud music, loud conversation and horseplay ect.
But my daughter's college, it was just creepy to me. Every kid was either on their phone or had their earbuds in. Very little interaction between each other. I could actually hear the windchimes on an art project in the middle of a courtyard-funny that I can remember that.
I'm not saying this trend is the end of society, but it sure as hell is changing society profoundly.
I have a smartphone, use it mostly as an internet gateway for my ipad at work (I don't use company internet for personal use) and I follow sports on Twitter ect. I'm not obsessed with it like so many.
Four people enter an eatery and sit down to socialize - They all pull out their little gadgets and sit for two hours talking electronically to people that are else where...They may as well have stayed home.
I'm in my mid-30s. I started the thread. Does that make me an old fart, too?

Old fart is state of mind, so, yes, you both qualify. BTW, I'm 67.
