I was pondering how the nation has moved farther and farther to the left over the last forty years, which does not portend a bright future for conservatives. Witness the 1980 electoral map.

Electoral Maps 1972-2008

Like 1980, we have an incompetent president presiding over one of the worst economies since 1980. In 1980, even "left leaning" states voted to eject Carter from office and seek a president who would restore economic prosperity to the US. Reagan won in a landslide. The nation by a large margin, which included many democrats, voted for the health of the nation, rather than simply voting for four more years of economic misery.

Fast forward to 2012. By my count, Obama gets between 156-232 electoral votes. He still loses the election, but it is shocking that we have the very same scenario as 1980, yet a much larger portion of the population appears poised to vote for four more years of economic misery, in stark contrast to 1980.

Has the left simply become less and less rational? With a large group of the nation voting in a partisan fashion, in direct conflict with the personal self interest and economic prosperity, what does this portend for the future?

As the dependent class grows, their vote will hold the power.
How do you get the dependent class on your side ? Why promise them more.

We have passed the line..over 60% of Americans depend on government financial payments in one form or another.

I don't think it's right or left..it's who will promise them the most for the least out of their pockets.

Look at an electoral map of the US by county, the country is almost totally red....except for clusters of major cities.

Conservatism is alive and well.

People say they are conservative but then vote for whoever will give em the goods. Politicians run on conservative ideals and then do the opposite when in office (Reagan is a good example)
Big government is alive and well and will be with us until the collapse.

It is not just bad news for conservatives, but also for the entire nation. We are heading down the same road as Greece and Spain. However, I do have one issue in regard to your 1980 vs. 2012 comparison: The 1974-1984 recession was much worse than the current 2008-Present recession, and that is also reflected in the Electoral College votes. It is not necessarily because the nation is moving more left, just that it reflects the severity of the economy. Voters are not hurting as bad in this recession as they were during the recession in 1980.

When has the left ever been rational?

The left are governed entirely by emotion. Fiscal irresponsibility is an emotional trait, not one based upon reason or rational thought.

As long as the left is in control of any branch of government, at any level (federal, State, or local), we will continue to see economic decline and fiscal irresponsibility.

I wish we had forums and threads from the 1960s. The same feelings were entrenched at that time. Growing income gaps, centralized, growing power at the federal government level, disillusionment with expanding US military prowess in the world, civil rights struggles for minorities (then primarily African Americans) help and welfare for the poor... In fact, I believe there is a radio address from Ronald Reagan in the 1960s that could be almost carbon-copied for many of the talking points done by conservatives today.

I disagree. What passed for conservatism during the 1960s would be considered "extreme" by the left today. My first election was in 1972, and I still completely agree with everything Reagan said in 1961, which makes me an "extremist" according to the leftists.
