It came from Mitt Romney's comment implying that we don't need or want any more firemen, teachers and cops.

Sooooooo you "stimulate" the economy according to these folks by using fed money to hire local firefighters. Well exactly what happens when the fed money isn't there in a year? They tried this nonsense once and a trillion or so dollars later where did that get us? A bunch of folks standing in the unemployment lines but they got a shovel in their hand provided to em by uncle sam.

If a city needs to hire more firefighters or whatever then they can find the money on their own. Unlce sam doesn't need to go handing out more money. Hell use some of that money the DHS has been throwing to every police force in the country. My little town got a nice new fancy water rescue craft with their dough. Only problem is nobody is trained on how to rescue anyone from water and the closest river is in another town who already has river rescue crap. They also got a pickup to tow it around and a little four wheel offroad vehicle that sits in the parking lot too. Yippee.

A Leach is a British guy who grovels for the "Rich and Famous." A leech? Well I think that is what you were shooting for....

Anyhow, I am right behind Mr. O with his idea of hiring a bunch of infrastructure workers to repair highways and roads, retrofitting buildings, etc. Those construction/trademen guys are exactly the ones who were hammered by the housing bubble and could not pay their mortgages. Get those leeches working again and we would also do a bunch of deferred maintenance for the next couple generations. Instead, I have a feeling we will keep raging against the gubbermint, whining about taxes, letting everything go to pot, and leaving our kids the bill.

Seems to me they are using this like a political time bomb. For example the one big complaint from the Democrats in my state is the "cuts" to education. The currently controlled Republican state government here in PA cut the education budget back to just above the pre stimulus levels, of course the Democrats are using this in political ads, the "GOP hates education". They never mention the fact it's actually higher if you exclude stimulus spending and never mind the fact education spending doubled the previous 8 years before that under Spendell.

It's very easy to go hiring these people when the Feds are paying for it but then try and get rid of them when the funds dry up.

The feds gave Texas stimulus money to be used on education. Texas took the money. Then used what they had set aside for education on other things. The next time that money was offered, a congressman said it had to be used for education. The governor went all over the country chastising the feds for trying to tell Texas what to do.

Government employment is down. Republican controlled states have laid off workers. The education budget in Texas is down, but we have more students. Some districts have had to lay off teachers. Class sizes are increasing. School boards are non partisan. I'll bet the rent money that most Texas school board members are Republican. Democrats are hard to locate here.
