Lots apparently if you live in Louisiana and think that Islamic schools should not get the same funding as more "favored" religions in the US:

Other critics complained that they just learned one of the schools approved for the voucher program was an Islamic school. Still others objected to the spending plans as part of their continued opposition to the voucher program and the other education changes pressed by Jindal.

Rep. John Bel Edwards, D-Amite, head of the House Democratic caucus, said it was erroneous to declare the legislation could pass without 53 votes. And he said claims were false by the Jindal administration and BESE that rejection of the plans would require a special session.

"The games that we play in this body with the rules and the law need to come to an end. Either you have the votes to pass it or you don't," he said.

Rep. Kenneth Havard, R-Jackson, objected to including the Islamic School of Greater New Orleans in a list of schools approved by the education department to accept as many as 38 voucher students. Havard said he wouldn't support any spending plan that "will fund Islamic teaching."

"I won't go back home and explain to my people that I supported this," he
said.

"It'll be the Church of Scientology next year," said Rep. Sam Jones, D-Franklin.

Carter, R-Baton Rouge, said the Islamic school withdrew its request to participate in the voucher program.

"They're not interested. The system works," he said.

If Christian, Jewish, and other religious based schools receive government funding directly or indirectly, than so should Islamic schools-- It's not just religions that are popular or that Republicans like that get funded. In my opinion religious based schools should not receive tax payer funding. Why should my tax dollars pay for your kid to learn about Jesus?

One more reason to end the Dept. of Education and have states fund their own schools! Get the Federal Government and our federal tax dollars OUT of education. Shut down the department and return the money to the states.

The same strategy was played out in individual states long before thre ever was a Department of Education. Pennsylvania began providing bus transportation (which evolved into a "turnkey" item of sorts) as early as the mid-1960's. Catholic parochial schools were the largest, and most immediate beneficiaries, but even the Old Order Amish are now purasuing a similar strategy.

But the point remains: The interest in charter and similar non-public educational alternatives is booming because of the high cost, the politicization, and most of all, the sheer arrogance of the public school unions. We need a Scott Walker who can help us stand our ground on a national level. It's either that, or let the whole bloated colossus collapse under its own dead weight.

Hatikvah Academy in East Brunswick is a "Hebrew language" charter school. I didn't know that Hebrew was so in demand.

- Hatikvah International Academy Charter School

BTW - "hatikvah" is the Israeli national anthem. Your tax dollars at work.

There has been a dept. of Ed since 1867. About 10% of education dollars come from the federal government, and that includes the school lunch program (dept. of Ag). The rest comes from state and local services.
