I think the kid did do the minimum to protect. The problem is that when one pulls a gun to commit a crime, the victim is just not sure what extent the offender is willing to go with the gun ( knife, whatever).
I think it becomes shoot or be shot mentality by the victim.
On the other hand, when learning to shoot, you are taught to aim for the largest part of the target which is the middle.
In a situation such as this, the victim is scared to death and not thinking to just shoot to scare. They're thinking me or you. Fear brings out survival instincts.
Yeah, the comment of too bad he didn't kill the intruder is a real positive one.
Why is it that with gun nuts (not all are, but most on CD are) the murder is the real draw.
Ooooh, let's kill.
Let's harm.
Not let's do the minimum to protect... it's usually kill, kill, kill.
You live with that.

All actions affect our lives.
Yes youre right. Shame on this kid.
Maybe you didn't read the article, but the man broke into the house (illegal in case you weren't familiar), and then pointed a GUN, at the kid, while other siblings were upstairs. This kid was probably the last line of defense before things could have gone horribly wrong. What do you suppose this guys future actions/intent was? To cook the kids some supper?
Who really cares if the kid would have shot and killed. The kid will get over it knowing he kept his family safe from a scum bag. How you could remotely stand up for someone breaking into another persons property and then pointing a gun at a kid is beyond me. Please stay in Portland.

Right, like John Wayne, shoot the gun out of his hand, or shoot his toe so he can't run away. Just enough so we can throw him in jail, pay for him for the rest of his life, and pay for his hospital bill, and then deal with impending law suit that the family has coming their way. Or is it too harsh if we send him to jail?
From what I gather, I'd say you've A) never shot a gun B) never encountered a criminal C) have no one you love enough to ptotect D)don't own anything like a car or house.

So between three children getting harmed, or an armed intruder getting shot, you would rather hurt three children?

The point is, the poster I quoted wanted the kid to KILL the intruder.
He was sorry that the kid did not kill him.
So many idiot gun owners on CD want to Kill, KILL, KILL!!!
Are they really such big idiots that they don't know that if they kill, there will be a negative effect on their lives? And I'm not talking legal system.

Are you purposely being obtuse?
Did you even try to read what I was saying, and it wasn't about the kid, it was about the poster who thought that the kid should have tried to KILL the intruder.
It is not a question that people love going around killing people. It is kill or be killed! criminals these days, don't bat an eye at killing the innocent, and age to them don't matter.
Burglaries these days, go astray, and the burglar so often ends up killing the homeowners. We have a right to protect ourselves and those we love to protect them. Or are we just to let the criminals break into our homes, and have their way with us.
Criminal minds don't give a hoot about killing a soul, and so much of the time, if let out of jail, go right back and commit the same crimes over and over again.
I think decent people have had enough of criminals and are finally speaking up for themselves and their own lifes.
I don't personally like the gun culture of the US, but I don't know if we will ever break ourselves of it.
Until then you'd be smart to defend your property with one.
Good job Kid.
