How many friends or family do you have that DO charity work in their free time? I'm not counting giving money via a mail donation, putting money in the Salvation Army red bucket during holidays, etc but actually engaging in a charitable activity. Examples below...

1. Donating blood at a donor center
2. Serving food at a homeless shelter
3. Working with Habitat for Humanity on home construction
4. Picking up litter with a group in your area
5. Visiting elderly with no family in a nursing home
6. Helping the Red Cross during natural disasters
7. Cleaning out kennels at an animal shelter
8. Providing a temporary home to a rescue animal until it is fostered by a family or individual
9. Any other ACTIVITY you can think of that is charitable

I am sad to report that I have no family members and only 1 friend who do any of these or other things that would be considered charity work. Would you say that only a small percentage of Americans do any of these things? Would you say that few may have done an act of charity once but never again or do you know people who make a habit of doing charitable work?

I volunteer at a homeless shelter, but suspect many no give as freely because the gubemet says they will do it and steal their money to do so.

I was doing #2 with my kids but then my kids would point oiut that the homeless people had better cell phones than we did. Also the shelter changed because they said that always at the beginning of the month when the homeless get their SSI checks, the visits drop dramatically because they're out spending their money on liquor, drugs and eating out. Then when they run out of money they show back up at the shelter so the shelter has decided it's just acting as an enabler and is going to start charging the visitors for the meals and expecting more out of them.

#7 would be too risky because I'd most likely bring most of the animals home with me.

I do #5 and also have several family members that help with the Red Cross.

I admit, I do none of it, and don't know anyone who does either.

1. Donating blood at a donor center
Once every three months
2. Serving food at a homeless shelter
Don't have one.
3. Working with Habitat for Humanity on home construction
They have training meetings, but haven't built anything in nearly 5 yrs or repaired anything in nearly 3 yrs
4. Picking up litter with a group in your area
It would take away jobs from state employees and prisons
5. Visiting elderly with no family in a nursing home
Except for meals on wheels which I do during snow days, this is done by HS kids.
6. Helping the Red Cross during natural disasters
N/A
7. Cleaning out kennels at an animal shelter
State Job
8. Providing a temporary home to a rescue animal until it is fostered by a family or individual
I have enough of my own to take care of, but I'll list the link for your state.

I used to give time at a food pantry as well as donate food.
It was in an urban/suburban setting (near Austin TX). But the types of people who came in for "free" food and their attitudes got to me and I had to stop to preserve my sanity. Gave me a bad taste for "trying to help people" I'll tell you.

I've since moved to a more rural area and have been to their food pantry twice now with donations. Have seen the folks who come in and what a difference; these are people who need help and are truly thankful. Night and day from what I experienced in Austin.

I also volunteer in the schools to help with Math tutoring. Did it in Austin in the inner city schools and also do it out here in the rural area.

Charity choices reports that 29% of people have volunteered averaging 50 hours per year. Utah has the highest percent being about 50%. Women with children volunteer more than single women.

I'm part of a church where, oddly enough, almost all of these things - and far more - are done on a regular basis. It's pretty amazing.
