I don't want the federal government to run like a business, in fact I want as little of it as possible and whats left should be very slow moving.

If a representative has no understanding of what he/she is voting for, they have no business
being allowed to vote on it in the first place.

But, who is going to prove they "read it". Certainly can not depend on a gentleman/woman
agreement - not with that bunch...

I'd go much further than Rand.
I'd make the Congressmen/women take a multiple choice test on what is in any bill, before
they can vote on it. Can't pass the test, they don't get to vote on it.

Seriously. Imagine our founders came back to life for a moment. Imagine telling them the following:

Our Congress and Senate members:

have great pay and benefits

made their post a full time gig

dont read or understand half of what they vote on

have up until recently been allowed to engage in insider trading

think that the government can force people to purchase something/enter a contract

Seriously, wth is wrong with us? How in God's name did we fall this far? In what frigging world do we elect someone to a bs full time position gig to oversee this country, and they arent even expected to read/understand the bills they vote on???? And SOME people are perfectly okay with that???!!!!

And most of the laws they pass don't apply to them.

Dont tell me they dont have time to sit down and read bills. Like I said, they do part time work, for full time pay with great benefits. If we had any sense in our nation, we never wouldve allowed this to be a full time gig, having being spent on tv, radio, campaigning, ie bull crap

And why is it the most likely people to oppose the reading/understanding of bills, seem to be liberals?
Blame our election process. No other county in the world makes campaigning a full time job (or allows campaigning to happen all year).

I doubt if the founders would think that lying (or misleading statements/advertising) would be protected speech or corporations are people or that money is free speech.

Making someone read something, does not make them knowledgeable or understand what they read.
Maybe we should require everyone to read and understand the tax code before they can vote or work...........
(I know that is a little extreme, but if you expect anyone elected to have knowledge in all areas covered by government, you might as well go look for the man in the moon)

But what about the lawyers? The army of lawyers may have to actually go out and <eek> get a real job without the complexities they insert into the laws to benefit their own profession. FYI nearly half of Congress is lawyers and the single greatest contributor to politicians is lawyers with a majority of those contributions going to Democrats. Everything else pales in comparison... energy, health, banking, unions..... pffffft they are all small timers.

Do you think a 300 page amendment that appears at 3AM on the day of the vote is enough time to read, assess and debate something? These bills are ridiculously complex, not only do they need to be read but they also need to be assessed and talked about and that would include the staff that is giving advice to the Congressman.

Its the size and scope of government that is the problem.
