......................The real issue ... when we consider the crappy state of interstate highways today, and the crumbling bridges, is that State and Federal Transportation authorities have squandered vast amounts of money over the decades, and now face the costs of years of neglect, and want to jack us up some more to foot the bill. It's like everything else ... they need more and more, while delivering less and less......................

Indeed. The federal fuel tax has been used not primarily for repair of road, bridges and interstates but as a Congressional slush fund with which to pander special projects to voters so they can get re-elected.

Are you suggesting that paying directly for infrastructure use via a tax on distance traveled is worse than a gas tax which hides the cost of infrastructure?
Or are you saying an anonymized Fastrack-style system is no better than a GPS-based system?
Diesel fuel, up until recently, was always cheaper than gasoline, while it's the heavy commercial trucks that cause much more damage to roads than do cars, but pay separately for commercial transportation taxes that probably do not cover the damage they do in relative amounts payed by non-commercial public use.
I suggested it was on the fairer taxes, not completely fair. What the fuel costs doesn't play a factor because the taxes are fixed price per gallon with the exception of a few states that also charge a sales tax. Also keep in mind trucks pay large registrations fees. I was paying almost $700 for a larger single axle truck Having said that they don't pay a fair amount but raising taxes on the trucking industry is going to drive up the sots to the consumer if you were local service like me. Long haul is debatable because that may drive many of those shipments onto rail which may offset the costs.

The lower revenues at least recently are due to the decrease in travel. Having said that as more of these cars come on the market they need to be addressed. If you have a fully electric car you're paying nothing.......

Exactly, what is the issue? If you want that product delivered it's part of the cost. You the consumer is always going to pay those taxes, business's and corporations are just tax collectors. On the expense sheet which are added into the final cost of the product to the consumer taxes are listed right below the light bill.
As for personal vehicles guess you just have to eat it but most of your vehicle traffic it is local, the federal governement is partially funding those roads so no matter where they buy their fuel they are partly paying for it , unless you're frequent traveler on border areas a lot of those people will be buying fuel in that state and finally people from other states are suing the roads you paid for. Overall it probably evens out to some degree, I would suggest it's inconsequential.
Hopefully the people of SF tell the council right where to shove those gps transmitters.
The residents of San Francisco are mentally disturbed. The fact that they elected these moron City Council members in the first place should have told you that much. Only those who want the ultimate nanny state live in San Francisco. Normal Americans live elsewhere.
I say go for it. Charge $1.00 per mile and let the good citizens pay "their fair share" to the government.
With such energy efficient cars these days revenue is down. Actions have consequences.
