Alcoholism is a pretty big disease in the US. As are its eventual effects such as cirrhosis. And of course there are tons of drunk driving deaths each year, often taking innocent lives. Hell half the time you read a story about drunk driving, it's the drunk who lives and the family of four who die. Why doesn't the government treat drinkers the way it treats smokers? Why don't they increase taxes on alcohol? Why don't they run ads encouraging people to call a help line? Why don't they institute more drinking bans, maybe preventing you from buying more than a six-pack a day?

You'd think the nanny statists would just love to help these souls

A drunken or drugged population is much easier to control than those fully aware- They want you to be weak.

The government needs to do less, not more.

It's none of their business.

Tried that, failed miserably.

Besides, I can drink a beer a day every day and not have any problems. Nicotine is more addictive then heroin. Alcohol, not so much.

Of course Marijuana is illegal, and it isn't addictive at all, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it. I know i will

Government has a built in incentive to create as many alcoholics as possible. If they increase alcohol taxes, like they did tobacco, they will have fewer people buying alcohol and therefore make less revenue. Just like with tobacco. Despite the massive tax increases on tobacco, both the Feds and the States are actually making far less on those taxes than when the taxes were much lower.

When government taxes drugs (as in alcohol and tobacco), do not be surprised when government lowers itself to the level a common street pusher. Profiting from people's vices (e.g., "Sin Taxes") is about as morally low as anyone can get.

It's not the government's job to take care of people.

There was that thing called prohibition... and that was fixed quickly because it will never work.

Hey..it brings in revenue. All those "no refusal" weekends are becoming more popular and occur more often.

Generally, I agree with your sentiment; however, when people doing whatever they are doing endanger and take lives, that's different. Drinking is none of the government's business, but driving whilst drunk is everybody's business. When a drunk driver takes a life, s/he should be tried for Murder 1. Premeditated. Willful. No excuses.

So what's your solution?
