With a withering tax base even progressives resort to union busting.

Crime-ridden Camden, New Jersey - often referred to as the most dangerous city in the United States—is getting rid of its police department.
In the latest example of a cash-strapped municipality taking drastic measures to deal with swollen public sector liabilities and shrinking budgets, the city plans to disband its 460-member police department and replace it with a non-union “Metro Division” of the Camden County Police. Backers of the plan say it will save millions of dollars for taxpayers while ensuring public safety, but police unions say it is simply a way to get out of collective bargaining with the men and women in blue.
“This is definitely a form of union-busting," Camden Fraternal Order of Police President John Williamson told FoxNews.com. “This method is unproven and untested, to put your faith in an agency that doesn’t even [yet] exist.”
I feel bad for other communities that the county police force are currently patrolling. Once the county takes on Camden, a community with more crime problems that surrounding towns, those other communities will more than likely be left without adequate police protection.
You get what you pay for in this instance. I hope it works out for all but feel worse for the other towns than I do Camden.

I wonder also about the quality of the new non-union county officers? I wonder if they'll be willing to risk their lives for minimal benefits most be a moral killer.
There is going to be NO police at all? How? It's like this town is being left to burn.
No, New Jersey has about 566 municipalities. The State is trying to consolidate them to share services and reduce cost. I think they want to move more towards a county-wide police force instead of putting so much emphasis on individual towns and cities.
Whatever the reasons are in this instance, I think the time has come (a long time ago) for governments to seriously consider consolidation of services - why does a single county need 20 different law enforcement agencies, 12 school districits, 8 fire districts, etc, etc?
I wonder at how much money is wasted on redundancies...
