Obama's Middle East Policy Is In Ruins

"US President Barack Obama's Middle East policy is in ruins. Like no president before him, he tried to win over the Arab world. After some initial hesitation, he came out clearly on the side of the democratic revolutions. … In this context, he must accept the fact that he has snubbed old close allies such as Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Egyptian military. And now parts of the freed societies are turning against the country which helped bring them into being. Anti-Americanism in the Arab world has even increased to levels greater than in the Bush era. It's a bitter outcome for Obama."

"Obama was naive to believe that one only needed to adopt a new tone and show more respect in order to dispel deep-seated reservations about the free world. In practice, the policies of the Obama administration in the region were not as naive as they may have seemed at times, and the Americans have always been much more involved in the Middle East than the passive Europeans. But Washington has provided the image of a distracted superpower in the process of decline to the societies there. This image of weakness is being exploited by Salafists and al-Qaida, who are active in North Africa from Somalia to Mali."

"One thing is clear: If jihadists believe they can attack American installations and kill an ambassador on the anniversary of Sept. 11, then America's deterrent power has declined considerably. For a superpower, it is not enough just to want to be loved. You have to scare the bad guys to keep them in check."

Yes, his policy IS in ruins. That won't stop the leftists masquerading as journalists from refusing to cover it. Instead, we'll get a steady diet of propaganda telling us about Mitt Romney's tax returns, Obama's brilliance, and how Bush is really to blame.

One thing I learned while I served in the Middle East is that Arabs don't respect weakness....only strength and force.

THIS article precisely and concisely lays out exactly what Obama's foreign policies are and went wrong with them. You will NEVER see this in the Democrat Party controlled U.S. media. Note that this was in a foreign news source, where they speak out on what is really happening and call it like it really is.

But what is the discussion on CD and on U.S. news media? About Romney's "too quick" response to events in the Middle East? Are you kidding me? No really, are you kidding me?

Some say this is a return to 1979. I'm not a fan of Jimmy Carter. Carter had his problems with Iran, but he inherited policies that were brewing over decades before him. At least Jimmy Carter brought Israel and Egypt together. Obama's foreign policies in of itself led to chaos.

Exactly....BRAVO!!!

Often when you want REAL commentary of US political issues, you get unbiased journalism from foreign sources.

The bulk of the MSM is just another Wing of the Left Wing Party.

It's AMATEUR HOUR with Obama!!!

The protest was announced on August 30th....but they act as if they didn't have a clue.

Obama ignored warnings for the last 3 years that security at our Embassies was lax

On the Anniversary of 911, don't you THINK someone MIGHT have thought it would be a good idea to beef-up security?

Credible information warned of these attacks 48 hours prior to them

There's a report stating that, just like the murdered Border Agents, the Marines were barred from using live ammo

I do not agree with the facile reasoning herein.

It certainly appears that these protests were the result of that video (and that the attack on our embassy was a coincidence of timing, or else they 'took advantage' of the protests to strike).

I agree with the thought that many of these protesting Muslims (who have been living in countries that had been ruled by dictators for decades) are in for a shock: if they want a free society, then speech, or even videos, that you disagree with is part of freedom. I do not think many of these third world people are ready for such freedom.

Of course, the maker of that video has, probably, achieved the result he wanted: to really, really anger Muslims, and perhaps start a war between Christians and Muslims.

I see where the Egyptian military is helping guard Americans in Egypt. I also saw where the president of Egypt initially posted a facebook posting in which he condemned the video, without condemning the attacks. After President Obama spoke during an interview of his uncertainty as to whether Egypt is an 'ally', and then placed a personal phone call to the Egyptian president, said Egyptian president quickly changed his tune, making a statement in which he condemns those who attacked the embassy, and saying that the actions of a few do not represent the Egyptian people as a whole. Sounds like the President, at least, handled the Egyptian president well.

I admit, I do not understand this revisionist history going on herein. The Arab Spring uprising was spontaneous and spread quickly to several countries. I recall many on this board condemning Obama for, well, remaining silent for much of the Egyptian uprising. It was not until January 28, 2011, that President Obama made his first statement. Here is a good summary of his statement, and subsequent action, by The Nation (cited by many herein as a reliable source of information).

Obama and Egypt's Revolution | The Nation#

The article points out that once Mubarak resigned, Obama was quick to call on the people of Egypt to calm down and not plunge the country into chaos.

Is President's Obama's Middle East policy in ruins? Perhaps, but perhaps not. Time will tell. It is way too soon to give an intelligent answer (the time is always right for stupid, uninformed answers, it seems).

Time is up. Back to work. Sorry I could not address more points.

Wrong....the protests were announced on August 30th. They were to be protesting for the release of the Blind Sheik who's serving a life sentence in the US for the 1991 WTC Bombings.

It wasn't about the video! Going on and on trying to EXCUSE murder because of some video is actually quite disgraceful.

Christians are insulted constantly....no one CARES about their outrage.

LOL....Obama was contradicted on that "ally" comment immediately by his own State Department!

Also, the Egyptian President doesn't care and it's at all threatened by Obama......he's calling for MORE PROTESTS!!!

The article quoted in the OP is anything BUT stupid or uniformed.

Obama went on an apology tour and thought that's all it took. His "charisma" would make them all love us.

He totally ignores that they are at war with us regardless of if we think we are at war with them.

He won't even call terrorists terrorists anymore.

He called the Fort Hood shooting "workplace violence". Terror attacks are called "man-caused disasters".

The weakness of our government to even say this video was the cause... it was not! It was a tool, the haters of America used it as a reason that they killed Americans. Does this mean the next time the Muslims see a video or anything they don't like it will be reason to kill Americans??

This is a bad stance the democrats are taking.. an apology? Killing Americans grants an apology from the United States.. what kind of country have we become? Where is the outrage from our White house?

No film , no video should even be considered to be the reason for killing Americans.. They attacked us with hate and they are terrorists and we need to send a clear signal we will not tolerate this regardless of any video they feel is offensive.Period!

OK, let's hear this intelligent and reasoned take on things.

WRONG. This situation was brewing for DECADES only to be exacerbated by Obama's policies for the last three years. Current events were a culmination of things happening for a long time, not solely based on some stupid video shown last week.

Sorry your argument failed right out of the chute, and not only that, shows just how much depth (or lack thereof) your argument has. But no matter. Your teacher told you just how smart you are compared to others so it must be true, right?
