obama could and should have politely declined to accept it.
The nobel committee actually MENTIONED GWB when giving the prize to Carter (or maybe it was Gore).

In fairness, Carter deserved one for the Egypt-Israeli work and it's insulting to give someone an award because you are trying to get in a shot against someone else.

Who says the Nobel peace prize committee lost it's international credibility? You? And who are you? Are you on the committee?

None of the Nobel committees announce beforehand who is on the list. The winner never knows he won until the famous telephone call. None of the committees are required to say anything whatsoever about how or why they reached their decision. All of the committees are made up by persons from all over the world.

No one knows how long it takes for them to reach a decision, but some of the committees have voluntarily said their selection process often takes more than a year to reach. All the committees consider just more than one year at a time during their deliberations.

And, you know what? Neither juneaubound's opinion nor banjomike's opinion counts for doodley squat with them.

"Deserve" is the wrong word.

You should keep in mind that the only reason the Nobel Committee has publicity at all is due to their huge amount of money. They are a bunch of rich politicians giving away millions of another person's dollars every year. They are no more credible than the lottery contests which also give away millions. The only difference is there are no politics in the lottery.

The only ones I have seen that fit your description are his family members.

A huge amount of money does not make an organization credible.

In view of current events then that would leave Obama owing them one back.

What about President Obama's own comments?

Quote:
He stated that he does not feel he deserved the award,[13][14] and that he did not feel worthy of the company the award would place him in. In remarks given at the White House Rose Garden on the day of the announcement, Obama stated, "I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments but rather an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations."
2009 Nobel Peace Prize - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
In a USA Today / Gallup Poll conducted October 16–19, 61% of American adults polled responded that they thought Obama did not deserve to win the prize
Quote:
According to The Washington Post news analyst Dan Balz, "[E]ven among his supporters there was a sense of surprise and even shock on Friday [the day of the announcement], a belief that the award was premature, a disservice and a potential liability."[33] An editorial in The Washington Post began, "It's an odd Nobel Peace Prize that almost makes you embarrassed for the honoree", and compared the Nobel Committee's statement that Obama had "created a new climate in international politics" to a recent satirical skit on television.[25] A Los Angeles Times editorial said the committee "didn't just embarrass Obama, it diminished the credibility of the prize itself".[23] Thomas L. Friedman of The New York Times wrote, "It dismays me that the most important prize in the world has been devalued in this way".[26] Much of the commentary across the political spectrum involved describing the award as something risible, with the humor focusing on Obama's getting the award without having accomplished much. According to an analysis in The New York Times, "it [...] [is] striking how so many people seemed to greet the Nobel news with shock followed by laughter,"[34] On the morning of the announcement, several of The Washington Post's opinion-page columnists, posting at the newspaper's "Post Partisan" blog, characterized the award as laughable or directly satirized it, including such supportive columnists as Ruth Marcus ("ridiculous—embarrassing, even"),[35] Richard Cohen (who satirized the award),[36] and foreign-affairs columnist David Ignatius ("goofy" and "weird"),
Seriously, where have you been? There were people all over the political spectrum going WTF. This is of couse not Obama's fault but to try to back-rationalize the decision is beyond odd.

My opion is that the Obama peace prize is like Sara Palin. The only ones defending the selection are extreme partisans....but only because they are knee-jerk defending the undefendable out of partisan warfare.
