I listened to the Interview, and while I disagree with the man spanking the girl, a few things were glossed over by the OP.
1. The girl allowed someone to copy her work.
2. She and the other girl were sentenced to detention.
3. After the first day of detention, she opted for a spanking rather than to serve the rest of detention.
4. The MOTHER approved.
5. School broke the rules, spanking supposed to be administered by a person of the same sex.
6. Had it been my 7th grade FEMALE ASSISTANT GYM teacher, it probably woulda been worse. (Woman had 1 eyebrow, no neck, and kinda reminded me of that Gym teacher on that movie Porkey's.
A fair breakdown of the article. There were rules and it would seem the school ignored them. They will be held accountable for them. I bet the student thinks twice though before cheating again.
She opted to take the spanking? Then they should have given her the other punishment.
It takes the "choice" right out of the scenario. Giving them a "choice" reduces the consequence in their world (IMHO). The moment she thought that the alternative would be worse, they should have given that punishment to her.
She thought that the oher punishment(suspension) would have been worse be cause she did not want to miss school.
She shouldn't have allowed the other student to copy her work. She facilitated cheating. A mistake - but one that she likely won't do again.
The only thing that the school did wrong here was not have a female paddle the student.
Makes no difference to me what sex the teacher and student were; there's no excuse for this.

I'll bet that she goes back to school. I was whooped in school. There was no question that I would go back the next day.
I'll say the odds are right about 100% that she goes back.
CPS would arrest a parent for this type of abuse. This is twisted on so many levels. There should never be corporal punishment administered in a school to a child.

Abuse? She got a few swats on the rear end because she cheated. She did not have to be paddled - she could have missed a few days of school instead. Her mother gave permission and the girl gave her consent. How is this "abuse"?
The school bus incident that we were discussing a few months ago would have likely never occurred if the driver carried a paddle and was allowed to use it. Guess what - she probally never would have to use it. Having it around would be deterrant enough for those punks to sit down, shut up, and behave.
An education system that allows unruly children to run the school inevitably will fail in its mission to educate those students.
It is terrible that school gave such an option to begin with.
