According to a group of 300 retired admirals and generals called Mission: Readiness, three-quarters of Americans aged 17 through 24 are not capable of serving in the military, many of them because of weight. The people at Mission: Readiness believe the meals American schools serve their children are a major culprit.
"We cannot succeed in teaching our children to eat healthier foods while selling them 400 billion junk food calories in our schools every year," a Mission: Readiness study called "Still Too Fat to Fight" says (the study is unrelated to Artie Lange's memoir, "Too Fat to Fish," but is a followup to an earlier study, "Too Fat to Fight").
According to the study, a quarter of young adults in this country would be ineligible to serve in the military due to being overweight.
They have good reason to worry. During the draft of WWII an alarming number of guys had to be rejected because of preventable diseases caused by poor diets. It was the driving force for introducing snacks and lunches into the schools. It started out with just milk, apples and nuts in the late mid to 40s and evolved from there.
Pre boot camp, boot camps are ok at the moment. If you had a sudden crisis where you needed to raise a huge army ASAP, having to spend the extra weeks/months to get someone in shape to even enter regular boot camp could be very costly strategically.
I've seen that kind of thing ever since I started high school. I don't see a "pre-boot" bootcamp as a bad thing. For instance, those kids who are great with body strength but lack things like running endurance. It builds them up for it. It's also great for people who have the brains, but not the physical forte.

That's fine, honestly, anything to get our fat country in shape.

oh absolutely it's just sad that that's what has to be done now...it's been allowed to get this far by both extreme sides...one side wanting to make laws...and the other side zomg they're talking about health to my kids or giving nutrition classes to the poor what next???
Speaking of obese, that is what our millitary is. Time to downsize the empire wich means reducing troop levels.
Problem solved with no need for government nannies to worry about waistlines of the general public.
