If there is one thing about this country that makes absolutely no sense is this stupid, lazy, car-centric culture.
After having spent sometime in Europe, it is really hard to become one of the sheep- so I ride my bicycle to work everyday and there is nothing better!
I was comparing obesity rates in countries like Germany and the Netherlands-where walking and riding a bicycle is widespread and they are about 10%. The United States will have obesity rate of 75% by the year 2020.
Something has definitely gone wrong here!
Europe is populated by a lot of tiny little countries that are relatively close together. Right now, I live 32 miles away from my place of business and there is no public transportation available. The roads I travel on are narrow, there is no shoulder, it would be suicide to ride a bicycle on them. If I were inclined to get up three hours earlier and return home three hours later, that would mean I could only get 5 hours of sleep per night, which would not be practical or sensible.
Also, during the summer, the temperatures are well over 100 degrees and we frequently get several ice storms during the winter. Bicycle riding simply will not work. Plus, being a business owner, I frequently have to run errands to the bank and other places during the work day. They are all 5- 10 miles away from my place of business and it would be impractical to try to bring back heavy items (i.e. a box of computer paper, for instance), on a bicycle.
I love cars, especially fast cars with powerful engines. I only own 3, but if I had a bigger garage I would own more. Nothing is better than a high powered sports car.
What is the point of having all these cars with powerful engines if the Nanny State will not even allow you go to go faster than 75 mph/hr?
Cars are one of the dumbest investments, since they are depreciating assets, but at least, the Germans could better justify this type of "investment", given the fact that they can drive as fast as they wish on the Autobahn.
I don't understand the logic in having all these fast cars here in the "Land of the Free", since you can't even legally use them to their full potential.
You don't think a 75% fuel tax has anything to do with reducing car size and ownership ????????
Oh I sure do...... I wish I still owned my 67 Pontiac Fire Bird with that 400 ci ram air engine i added a lot more parts to back then....... Like crane cam, solid lifters, holley carb, ladder bars and etc, but in this day i would hate feeding that engine too....... bad enough i own a rolling bed room that has a puny 381.
I do trucks and bikes, but my bikes don't have pedals, except for the one pedal on the right side of some of them... When you push that one down, the bike won't move, but it makes a nosie like vroommmmmmmmmmmm
My bike is a Roadking Classic.... and makes lots of noise and goes quite fast

When the Nanny State is not looking, you can go as fast as you want.
Toys are not a dumb investment. They are for pleasure and can be neither smart nor dumb.
And all toys are depreciating assets. You don't buy them as an investment. They are an expense. Sports cars are like golf cubs; they are an expense for pleasure.

What did I miscomprehend? Here we go again, someone disagreeing with someone and out come the insults. I don't understand it. Nobody is arguing that those in places like Manhattan understandably do not drive cars. This is not controversial or in question.
You miscomprehended - and still do - that I am NOT saying that the world is like Manhattan and that, therefore, a car is not necessary. I simply stated that saying that people own fewer cars because of socialist EU governments is idiotic. Which it is, given the many reasons why people don't have or don't want cars - which are similar to the reason why people in Manhattan don't have or don't want cars. Geez, it's not the difficult...unless, of course, you fall within the same nut job category where everything can be explained by blaming socialism or Obama. Do you? For if you do, then it is rather pointless to have an exchange with you.
etc., etc. I don't have the time to dig into the articles - I do remember reading it somewhere (CNN, NYT) a while ago. Alas, you are the one who finds this incredulous... Take it or leave it - it means nothing to me. However, I would try to improve my reading comprehension if I were you...
Like people who drive Corvettes- They never look like very bright folks and they tend to be baby boomers obviously going through some crazy midlife crisis- my boss is one of these- probably one paycheck away from bankruptcy but he will not let go of his sports car- it is a like a little boy hanging on to his little toy car
I mean, these people are getting 14 miles per gallon in the city, they can't even drive above speed limit in the city and they are paying some outrageous insurance rates- absolutely idiotic but I guess, this country gives people the freedom to be stupid, after all
