Wow, I really feel the love. So why should people in the south vote for the Democratic Party when so many within the party hold the same hatred you do towards southerners, their culture, their religion, and the energy industries that help to employ many people in our area? We're well aware of how the TV and movie industry portray us in their productions made in NYC & LA. We also know those are the same people who contribute a great deal of time and money to the Democratic Party. You accuse us of racism, I accuse you, and others like you, of bigotry.

And that's your opinion, and you're welcome to it. But fortunatley, in a country thats free, even irrational beliefs are allowed.

My grandfather still votes democratic becauase he grew up during the depression and loves Roosevelt. But my grandmother votes Republican because of her religious beliefs. My father, who used to vote Democratic, now votes Republican and watches Fox news every hour of the day he's home. Never misses an episode of O'Reily.

But the reason he votes Republican is because he feels that they will cut regulations on his business, lower his tax obligation, and allow his company to grow. He doesn't care about the poor, the sick, or anyone else, its all about his business.

I can't say I blame him, thats his lifes blood, it feed me and him growing up.

But where I do find their beliefs irrational is this "Well Obama is turning us into socialsits/communists". My simple question is, how? The healthcare law? Thats not socialist, forcing people to buy a private product, hell it isn't communist. Bail outs? Bush administration did those, so have other Republicans. Its not a government takeover of the industry.

I prefer logical arguments over the gut check "he's a communist" ones. I'm not voting for either the D or the R.

I know it's hard for you to believe, but many successfull, educated people are conservative because we agree with conservative policies and don't give two hoots if the person is black, white, or green with polka dots.
180,000 people? That's all? Hell, the suburb (not the city just the SUBURB) I live in has more people than that. Do you have a siezable city (not county but if we're to consider it a sizable county please make it at least half a million) which replicates such results? It is very easy to find a small successful town/area but we're talking about whole regions here.

I don't know. I think these people would vote for a black man if he stood for the same values they did.

I have some faith in our southerners. I don't think it is all race. It probably is a factor in some places.

You can't say it always is or that it never is. The main thing is that they are conservatives if not fiscally, morally.

My other Grandmother won't vote for Romney, because he's a Mormon.

So YMMV.

Most Southern states still have more Democrats than Republicans...

However, because the Democratic party is mostly controlled by Northeastern and West Coast liberals now, many Southerners are turned off by this and vote Republican in national elections. To most people who are uneducated regarding politics and only pay attention to Presidential elections, this would indicate the South being a GOP stronghold. Clinton did quite well in the South, and obviously Carter did a great job. From my experiences, if the Democratic party took a more middle-of-the-road stance on some social issues, they'd win over most Southern states within the next ten years. Right now, I don't think most Southerners are too fond of either party.

The reverse effect is true, too. There are tons of Republicans in Illinois who voted for Obama; Chicago will almost always propel a Democrat to victory here in our state, but in most elections, the suburbs and almost all of Downstate (excluding the Quad Cities, Champaign and some counties in Southern Illinois) is solid GOP.

You realize that there hasn't been an election in recent memory that the Democratic candidate hasn't carried a VERY healthy majority of the least educated block of voters? Obama was the first Democratic candidate in quite a while to carry a majority of college educated voters - a block that almost always votes Republican ... so I'm not sure where your elitism stems from, but it's misplaced.

Well, maybe you shouldn't stereotype entire regions.

It's unbelievable and disturbing that a party (Democrats) that claims to be the "party of the people" has so many members who constantly puts down so many other Americans ... many of whom are in their party!
