Seriously, if the article is correct in what it presents, the only conclusion one can reach is that capitalism and democracy do not work.

If we are as evenly divided as 47-47% and each side continues to behave as if the other side is nothing short of evil, there is no hope for us.

I think you may have meant to post this to brightdoglover. Anyway I think the difference between household and family is that household would be singles, childless couples (married or just playing house), and Sr. Citizens

Arrogance all over the place.

84% have cable. The vast majority have only basic which is ridiculously high as it is. Arrogant statements about everyone wanting to pay $300 for NFL are a ridiculous attempt to say the lives of the US poor are nearly as "good" as the US rich. The statistic source was based on info about "cord cutting" which is actually dropping cable ILO streaming. Of course some make bad choices, they are not a majority.

The initial point, while certainly showing its own bias, is that the lives of the median families are getting worse. This has been going on a LONG time... yes even before Obama the socialist communist muslim marxist america hating dictator.

It can also mean groups of unrelated people who live together, such as me and my roommates.

We are all in our early 20s and we struggle, even though we all have full time jobs with benefits. In their cases, they have student loans to pay off. In my case, I have medical bills and the expenses of a car that I didn't want (but need in order to function now due to health struggles). We don't have cable, our gaming systems were bought years ago in college or from babysitting money in high school, and we still won't turn our heat on even though there have been several very cold snaps here in Boston. We're also all on the family plan with our parents for our smart phones - I pay less for my share than I would paying for a flip phone on my own. We don't have a house phone and while we have internet, it's less than $15 a person a month, and we have one of the slowest services.

My roommates have watched me struggle to pay off medical bills. While we're all insured, we're all just one medical disaster away from total financial devastation. In my case, it came when I was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer 4 months after starting my first job. Luckily I had some savings, but that disappeared within a month or two.

We live within our means as much as possible - don't go out, buy in bulk together, find as many creative ways to scrimp and save. We're 2 1/2 years out of college and had all hoped to have an emergency fund by now. The only person one of us who has any savings was the girl who was able to live at home for a year and a half before moving out on her own. Unfortunately, the other two of us had parents that live in rural areas (in Vermont and Georgia, respectively) and we were unable to find jobs near them to benefit from living at home.

Almost all of my friends live with roommates, even into their 30s. And these aren't losers - computer programmers, lawyers, business analysts... it's the only way to survive.

Your economy is like an unfaithful husband or wife...Who hangs around because you are a good worker..and have a steady income that they can tap into. Then things changed..the spouse inherits a ton of money by lying...Like the unfaithful partner they are now rich and simply do not need you or the family...so they abandon you for the good life- for fine wine and status...America got dumped by your so called elite- They were disloyal to the American family...

It is not that there is no money...The money exists and YOU do not have a share in what you worked for and what is rightfully yours.. Economies subside and diminish because someone steals the money...How will you bring loyalty back into the picture is the real question..

So now the American family is like a single father that is struggling to raise his children..while the wayward wife is off and about enjoying her self - living the good life- America- YOU got used....and resentment is in the air...Remember one thing- in reality you still have the real wealth..You have a family....You have your health..You cry because someone cut a hole in the sack of gold you were carrying....and did not share the wealth...Theft...has to be addressed.

The shlubs on the lower end are learning that in this glorious American capitalist system, the upper management can make them work longer, with higher expectations, for lower money.

Don't like it? We'll bring in some illegal labor or ship your job overseas.

Energy regulators and executives? Constantly applying for rate increases while cashing fat bonus and salary checks for themselves. Insurance companies? Hand over fist profits, while soaring costs for the consumer. The stock market roaring like never before, record incomes and low tax rates for the investment class.... yet still no jobs and no trickle down increase in salary and quality of life for the wage slaves and salaried drones.

In the 1950s and 60s, a father could raise a family of three with a wife at home on a single union salary with health benefits, pension and vacation benefits. Since then, unions have been destroyed, and corporate America has become the government's #1 priority. Bending over backwards to ensure the few (hilarious dubbed"job creators") are satisfied and fat and happy.

But oh! The poor in America have more STUFF! More STUFF, but less TIME. The least vacations in the modern world. Least maternity benefits and family considerations at work, and we wonder why the American family is deterioriating. Oh wait, I forgot. It's the gays and welfare's fault for that, right? Not the fact that a new mother gets by law a mere 3 months with a new baby before having to go back to work or risk getting fired. Family values not as important as economic concerns!

But yes, the GOVERNMENT is to blame.... but not for "stifling" the economy. Instead, it's too blame for letting corporate America run soughshod over the workers.

Come talk to me about how bad the economy is when you hear stories about billionaires having to make sacrifices in this country.... for ANYTHING.

To summarize: "We have met the enemy and he is us."

In the 1950s and 60s most of the modern industrial nations were still rebuilding from the destruction wrought from WWII, and we could afford to live large, because we were the only game in town. Every decade afterwards, those other industrialized nations have been busy catching up, and now even India and China are competing with us. If unions demand $50/hr pay to manufacture belt buckles, and companies in India can pay their workers $2 to make the same product....

What you fail to grasp, is that people start those belt buckle manufacturing businesses so they can earn a living and live the good life. Once they feel they need to sacrifice more then they want to, and running that business is more of a pain then it's worth, there will not be a belt buckle factory.

And immigration, especially illegal immigration is up in 2012. No matter that many Americans can't find work, the illegals are pouring over the border to take jobs and send money home. They're certainly not running into any difficulty.

Study suggests increase in Mexican migration to US in 2012 - El Paso Times

A new report by U.S. and Mexican researchers suggests an uptick in the number of undocumented immigrants headed to the United States in the first half of 2012, and a slight decrease in migrants returning to Mexico.
