Please remember that after every major natural disaster groups of people start up fake charities to collect cash for themselves instead of those in need after the disaster. Be very wary of people asking you to donate cash. If you wish to donate cash, donate directly to established charities who deal with such events. Other avenues of charitable donations besides Red Cross and Salvation Army include local religious organizations. They work through a network to coordinate supplies and shelters as needed. Things they may need includes clothing (including winter gear), non-perishable foods, and children's toys in good condition.
Anyone familiar with law enforcement or state/federal laws here? What should you do if you suspect someone is posing as a fake charity? For example, you see someone set up a table outside a supermarket or discount department store asking for donations to the people hit by Sandy and you think they're faking a charity,...do you just ignore them or can you report them to the police? Last time I saw fake charity setup I notified the store management and they called the police to run them off because they'd already been asked to leave.

Just about anyone can establish a church and obtain 501c3 status.
Best to stick to Red Cross for disaster relief donations.

I used to volunteer a lot in my youth to disaster relief in the surrounding areas where I lived. Red Cross can be just as bad about the use of their donations.
I saw local churches do far more for the victims in those situations than I ever did from them.
Salvation Army is pretty good. I have worked with them numerous times and never had any of the problems I did with the Red Cross.
