I don't know if there is already a thread like this... if there is would someone please direct me to it? Thanks.

Not that I am a pothead or anything, but why is marijuana illegal? Why aren't other things also illegal (cigaretts, hard liquor, etc.)? I've been thinking about this.. and haven't come up with an answer.

I have no problem with pot being legalized. I don't smoke it, tried it back in high school but never really got into it, same as smoking cigarettes...I'm just not a smoker. But I've been around people who smoke pot and they are just mellow. Alcohol in my opinion is much more mind altering.
The worst a pot smoker will do is eat a bunch of chocolate and fall asleep
That being said, I don't want my kids smoking pot or cigs or even really drinking when they are of age I guess I'm saying it's ok for others, just not my kids, lol.
But I think it should be regulated of course and the legal age 21, like alcohol and the same rules apply.

At least part of the answer is that the tobacco and liquor industries have large, well organized, well financed lobbies, Buy enough legislators and marijuana will be legalized pronto

While most states have enacted laws making marijuana illegal, at the federal level marijuana is not illegal. From a federal perspective, marijuana is a controlled substance that requires a federal marijuana tax stamp to grow or possess under the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937.

When Japan attacked Malaysia in 1942 and cut the US off from our hemp rope supply, the federal government issued marijuana tax stamps to farmers in Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois until 1945. Since 1945 the federal government has not issued any marijuana tax stamps, so growing or possessing the controlled substance would be in violation of the federal treasury tax law.

In the 70s Nixon passed Federal laws outlawing the possesion and use of many drugs that will get you charged and imprisoned today. Your right about the 1937 stuff but all of that was superceded by the fedral laws Nixon passed

I've passed a few around in my younger days, I have no problem with it, I enjoyed it much more than drinking and it never made me stupid things like Tequila has plus it stimulates the fast food industry
