Yes, it is most distressing, but then again, we have a poor attitude towards health care in this country (see SCHIP, universal health care, etc).

When I lived in Holland, about 90% or so women gave birth at home, midwifery and the country has a much lower infant mortality rate.

I am also reminded that abortion was a serious offense in France not too long ago, and physicians (some colleagues I knew) went to places like Amsterdam to be trained in the procedure. The reason they gave: to reduce morbidity and mortality. Don't have any data, just antedoctal info.

Gee, I don't know. Maybe it was the rant against Sanger, or that over PPFA. Perhaps it was the idea of being 'adamantly opposed' to PPFA's involvement in Title X funds, all of which go only to family planning programs. Are you saying now that you support contraception and Title X, and are glad that agencies like PPFA exist to make sure that such support reaches poor women? How about the Medicaid qualifications for contraception coverage? Ready to equalize the standards to those for pregnancy care so that up to 200,000 abortions per year might be avoided?

Considering that you thought Sanger's work involved abortion, I don't think you know even vaguely near enough about the woman to be making any sort of judgment at all.

america usually is one of... if not the last first world nation to get on board when it comes to social issues... we were last to abolish slavery, we were one of the last to adopt workers rights.. we are one of the last to approach the healthcare problems of our society...and we STILL argue about the place of religion in government.. even when it was determined in black ink 230 some odd years ago...
sheesh

NO ONE except my biological father knew I existed in my biological mothers circle of family, friends and co-workers and it is easier today to find a viable reason to disappear for a few months than it was over 30 years ago.

And there are many, many many women who use abortion as birth control, statistics show there are a large percentage of women who have had more than one abortion with no rape or incest involved. I know of one woman that has had 5 abortions and still "doesn't like the feel of condoms and the pill makes me bloated".
I believe "Pro-choice" is a political soap box that has resulted in an easy choice for people not to own up to the responsibility of their mistakes. Because lets face it, contraception or not, you have sex, there is a possibility of getting pregnant. You get behind the wheel of a car after a drink, you know you are taking the chance of killing someone else, yourself or at the least getting caught and going to jail and/or paying fines.

I do agree that the government needs to stay out of your "hooahh" (cute, I giggled too over that one) but I do not think the option of abortion should be given through a abortion pamphlet handed to every woman who is not thrilled at the news of being pregnant. The majority are not handed a choice of adoption. I think every woman should be counseled with EVERY option and given time to think about it before the procedure. Why can someone walk into a clinic and have it done within an hour? Do you know how many woman are devastated do to their knee jerk reaction and the readily available option of abortion?
Great post!

Thank you. Very hard to see, but necessary. It's the innocent one that is not given a choice here.

If I may say so, only those a little short on sleep would be going around consulting embryos on anything at all. But feel free to interject yourself as spokesperson for blastocysts everywhere...I'm sure you're entitled...

No, they don't. You could pay more to have a wisdom tooth removed. All of about 3% of PPFA's patients are involved in abortion services. Contraceptive services, STD screening, and cancer screening are the major services that PPFA provides...

That story of little Dana is beautiful, thanks for sharing. I have read it before, but always nice to read again. It reminds me of a friend of mine. His parents were told just after birth that he had MD and he wouldn't survive past the age of 10. I won't say it has been easy for him, he is now a grown man and has the legs about the size of a 7 year old, been through many surgery's and in a chair. He is now 40 years old, works, married and college degree to boot. One of the best people I know, just because he is himself, not because of what he has been through. Dr's are not always right.
