The stark reality is that the president doesn't have to do a thing.
The ball is almost entirely in Boehner's court and it will be intersting to see how he handles it.
If there is no agreement, the modified Simpson/Boles plan takes effect; ending the Bush tax cuts and implementing some rather drastic spending cuts. The result will be revenue increases, spending decreases and the deficit will shrink. The downside is those spending cuts could drive the economy back into recession, which no one wants.
I expect that the GOP's corporate owners will apply sufficient pressure to their underlings to assure that doesn't happen. There will be some compromise on revenue and spending. And that's the way politics works today and always has in the past. It only remains to be seen if the teabagger wing of the GOP sees their duty as elected government officials to govern or to hinder governing.

Wrong. The president absolutely must do something. He's promised to fix the economy and bring down the deficit. If he doesn't, it's going to be even more disillusioned American voters who realize a democrat in the White House isn't the solution.
And he can smirk and threaten all he likes -- but hikes in taxes on a handful will not accomplish anything.
Obama also owes us 24 million new jobs -- he's got a lot on his plate and he needs to get to work -- but instead he's taking another expensive vacation to Asia.

The nation made that decision last week.
The results were not mixed. The message was clear. Your GOP controlled house will be who calls this shot. The nation will be watching how they perform.

And when they come up with the needed spending cuts, Obama had better not obstruct. He needs to sign them in.
Face it --- Obama cannot go on spending money like there's no tomorrow. Those days are coming to and end.
Obama absolutely MUST start coming up with some serious spending cuts. Raising taxes on a handful of wealthy is not going to accomplish anything.
Cuts? Surely you jest. Other than defense, we'll be lucky to see a simple freeze, which would be called a cut. A real cut will never happen, especially where it's needed most - entitlements.
I think it is clear from the election and polls that Americans favor increasing taxes on the very wealthy. All that needs to happen is push the rates for taxes...all taxes (capital gains, inheritance, and tax brackets) to what they were during the Clinton term.
Republicans should just concede this point and begin negotiations on where to cut expenditures. Certainly there needs to be cuts with Defense, but other things need to be on the table.
Just let the Bush tax cuts expire, and let the people see just how the left lied to them about those evil "Boooosh tax cuts for the rich" because most everyone's taxes will go up.
You are correct, we will need to put everything on the table, because we cannot keep spending at these crazy 0bama $1 trillion plus deficit spending levels, it's just not sustainable.

0bama's admin has been going over the federal budget, line by line for almost four years, I'm sure they can find real waste to cut.

Let's watch what happens.

True. Unlike the last GOP president, he didn't inherit a prosperous nation at peace. Obama will ultimately be judged on what America is like when he leaves office. Like all presidents are.
Stay tuned.
