Health authorities in Ireland are investigating the death of a pregnant woman whose husband says she was denied an abortion following severe complications.

Savita Halappanavar, who was 17 weeks pregnant, died of septicaemia a week after presenting with back pain on 21 October at University hospital in Galway, where she was found to be miscarrying.

After the 31-year-old dentist was told that she was miscarrying, her husband reportedly said that she had asked for a medical termination a number of times over a three day period, during which she was in severe pain.

But he said these requests were denied because a foetal heartbeat was still present and they were told at one point: "This is a Catholic country."

How very pro-life of them....this where we're headed if the anti-choice zealots have their way.

Mixing religion and medicine; always a good move. Throw in a dash or two of politics and boy have you got a mess!

Another reason to rejoice for Obama's sweeping re-election. No Supreme Court Justice with radical right leaning policies will be appointed!!! Yay!!!

Well she did deal with the consequences --- she's dead. But she's not personally responsible for that: the authorities who denied her the abortion in order to save her life are.

I'm assuming you are anti-abortion. Why is that anti-abortion people always care so much about the potential life of an unborn fetus, but at least in your case have an "oh well" attitude towards people who are already alive?

Or should every pregnant woman be prepared to sacrifice her own life in case her life is at risk in carrying a pregnancy to term?---you are aware that means the fetus also does not survive, right?

Helloooooooo...

Quote:
Halappanavar turned up at UHG on 21 October and was found to be miscarrying, but died of septicaemia a week later. She asked medical staff several times over three days to terminate the pregnancy.

Her family claimed medical staff denied her a termination because they detected a foetal heartbeat. They believe the delay in allowing her the termination caused blood poisoning and ultimately her death on 27 October.

Recounting her final days in UHG, her husband, Praveen Halappanavar, said: "Savita was really in agony. She was very upset, but she accepted she was losing the baby. When the consultant came on the ward rounds on Monday morning, Savita asked if they could not save the baby could they induce to end the pregnancy. The consultant said: 'As long as there is a foetal heartbeat we can't do anything.'

What does this scenario and outcome have to do with your response???????????

Her family should have taken her out of the bat crap crazy country.

She wasn't allowed to deal the way she wanted though was she? Are you just trying to look like a fool?

You are wrong.

"Abortion in the Republic of Ireland is illegal unless it occurs as the result of a medical intervention performed to save the life of the mother."
