I can't interpret "well off" as having lots of money. I knew a guy who considered himself to be very well off. He was looking forward to a wonderful vacation, lots of travel and all the good stuff. Then Enron happened the day after he retired and he said he had too much of his nestegg in that so he figured he'd have to go back to work.

Later that week he found out he had cancer. He said it's funny how one's perspectives can suddenly change. Health is the big thing, if you feel great you can enjoy vacations like hiking and camping trips which cost very little but without health, you really won't enjoy a 5 star hotel all that much.

Since you never know how life really is for the rich, and the very rich seem to have a lot of substance abuse, it's better to just settle for happy and what you have.

Why inject emotion into the discussion with the question about envy?

In terms of what I would consider well off, it would be having the income/wealth to live in the neighborhood a person wants, with home/apartment/condo that they want.

The ability to fully fund their retirement/child's college/emergency savings.

The ability to travel a couple times a year.

Because envy is a part of it. You could make $150,000 a year but be hateful and miserable because someone else makes $200,000 a year. You might have a $60,000 new car but be jealous that your neighbor has an $80,000 new car -- so you never feel well off no matter what.

Kind of like all this hate-the-rich class envy that's being stirred up. More and more people now don't want to have to work for anything but instead have the government ream the rich and give everything they have to them.

I am not "well off". I don't have a house. I can't afford a vacation. I have a car payment, student loan debt, and a credit card bill.

But, I have a job. I have health insurance. And I am putting a kid thru college. That probably makes me ahead of a lot of folks in this country...and that is a sad truth.

Envy is not apart of it.

The rest of your post is irrelevant.

Considering that having drinking water is "well off" in parts of the World, I'd say well-off here in The US is not having any debt (or having more in collateral than debt) while also having a steady stream of income.

I live in AZ. Our government cut transplants. Most good insurance companies only pay a portion of transplants, not all. Yet she funded experimental business ventures which cost more in the name of more business in the future of Arizona. Money over health or peoples lives isn't an option to some of us.

Yes, I am an organ donor. As many Americans are. The people who agreed in my state also didn't educate themselves only to find later it isn't just the people on welfare who suffered from our states decision, they were willing to let them die, which itself is pretty snide. Most people don't have coverage no matter how good their coverage is for many of the other things you need before and after a transplant, they can't afford it, they don't have the cash either. They rely on the state to help cover the rest. Obamacare will hopefully help with most of them unable to get insurance in the future now and I'm sure Republicans will take advantage of it as well.

I don't have to sacrifice health of other Americans to keep the deficit down, that's not patriotic, it's idiotic. That's what my choice would be. If you say to me, NHS would put our country into the poor house then I'd reply with a so what. We are broke without it, lack of it didn't keep us out of the poor house, we can find a way to allow all people the basic right to health and happiness without being "well off"

The jealousy isn't for another t.v. or iphone, it's for the basics. Health, education. Everyone should have that right. Even if it takes a chunk to do it. We should be grown up enough to find a way. I won't sacrifice others health for a government without debt. I'm capable of giving up the iphone instead. Being "well off" is only a demon in our country because it money dictates our ability to live a healthy life. To gain an education. Nobody wants you to pay for their t.v or cable.

America is trying to change right now. Priorities are being moved and I'm glad. You don't like it and that is a shame but it won't stop me from trying to change it. You'll be covered as well and I don't mind it one bit. Even if you don't work a day in your life.

This is a poor me thread, who do you think is "well off" or in other words, who are you picking on. People without wealth should be able to go to a doctor and their kid should be able to get an education, they do this in Germany. I think then the "well off" wouldn't have a magnifying glass on it. It only does because those people who are sick and tired get jealous of people who can live without fear of their illness not being addressed and lack of education for their kids. Solve that and you can have all the pools and homes you desire without anyone picking on you. It's not your stuff people want and I think you know that.
