We all know that every legislator's #1 priority is to get re-elected (at least those who aren't term-limited); but what, in your opinion, SHOULD they be most focused on? Which guiding principle should they follow? See poll.

Default What should a legislator's #1 priority be?

To act in the best interest of the public.

BTW...

That's their job.

The legislator's number #1 priority is what he did on day 1, swear to uphold the constitutions. Which, of course, they did not read.

My answer was going to be, "You'll find it in the Oath of Office."

Representing their district is a given.

In theory, the priority of the members of the House is to represent the interest of their constituents and the Senate the best interest of the nation. Go figure.

Personally I think that it has to be a balancing act of all the above.

Of course, he must represent what the constituents want, but that doesn't always work if his constituents don't want what the establishment in either party wants. My representative has been thrown off two committees for voting the way we want him to do which sometimes gets him cross threaded with the leadership of the House. In a phone-townhall last night the people agreed to all call Boehner and tell him how wrong he was.

What more can a man do than what the constituents want done?

So Representatives should represent their constituents and Senators the whole nation? I think you missed the point in that Senators are elected to represent the state that elected them, too. At least when the constituents of our state make loud noises our Senators go with us, as they should.
