Obama has been nothing but neutral on the gun issue throughout his presidency, even now. I think he is talking about common sense measures. He is not just addressing the guns but mental illness as well.
These gun nuts should not hate Obama they way they do but you know there is the color thing they just can't get past even if he has been very tolerant of their crazy gun ways.
I think the real reason is that unlike you, the gun nuts remember Obama's gun control comments when he was vote pandering in 2008.
Since you can't remember that, you probably don't remember the NRA throwing Daschle out of office when he did the same thing while preparing to make a run at the presidency.

I believe that the primary reason for having the 2nd amendment actually put on paper was to leave no doubt that people had a right to defend themselves from their own government if they had to. The hunting, plinking, and burglar-shooting aspect was just an added benefit. Unfortunately, most people would rather talk about hunting and plinking because they're too uncomfortable and sheepish to acknowledge that governments have a tendency towards despotism from day one.
