What would more legislation do to stop the insane from acting out in a violent way? I think our mental health as a country is in decline and violence in Hollywood needs to be examined. They have far too much influence on our society as it is. If every school employes a returning veteran and arms him to protect the school it would or could provide some much needed employement....

What would more legislation do? Absolutely nothing! Gun bans are not going to stop criminals from obtaining them. Sorry, but as tragic as this is, I would still want the opportunity to defend myself, and my family. And we can't blame Hollywood, or video games, or rap music. What needs to be restored is the family unit, which is falling apart in this country. As for Hollywood influence, you can change the channel. I do however also believe that we need better mental health care in this country.

This was posted in the comment section of TPM's article on Manchin. The author is a poster named bluestatedon.

"I demand the ability to exercise my Constitutional right to carry a weapon into the visitor's gallery in the U.S. Senate. If it's OK for Louie Gohmert to advocate for the right to have loaded weapons in schools, then it's OK for U.S. citizens to be packing while they watch deliberations of their elected representatives on the floors of the United States Congress. If I'm crazy and shoot a bunch of Senators or Representatives, then that's the price of freedom. The practical impact of the NRA's policies is that schoolchildren are expendable, and if kids are to be sacrificed on the altar of unlimited gun rights, then our elected representatives who enact the laws are too."

If one cannot do that without a military first used assault weapon, they are inept.

It's going to take more than gun laws to stop this craziness.

Decoding what is an inherent need to be armed, from Americas DNA , is going to be a helluva challenge which I fear no law can change. Over the weekend I watched as Colorado’s Governor, John Hickenlooper say in one breath gun laws had to be tweaked and within seconds explained how his grandfather taught him how to shoot and clean a 12-gauge shotgun and showed him how to hunt, he in return has done the same for his son.
Banning the sale of high power and semi -automatic guns and rifles is a start, but there will be decades of reconditioning of the psyche and a cultural shift, before we see a drop in this type of lunacy.

I was an NRA member for a number of years. I own quite a few guns. And I think it's past time that some sort of action should be taken (I don't know exactly what ) to minimize the opportunites for seriously unstable individuals to have access to firearms. It's clear that the current system has too many holes.

Yeah, because they're all stable and should be around little kids with a gun. Great idea.

I wonder if Insurance companies could play a role here. Perhaps insurance policies should be exempt from offering Homeowners' insurance if a home contains someone with mental disorders (for lack of a better term) and weapons. If we made people choose between their so called 2nd Amendment rights and their family members, hhhhhmmmm. After all, in most cases, how could a mortgage be obtained without some form of homeowner's insurance?
