Every group and industry in the country makes some effort to self-regulate the activities of their members. The do this to avoid unwanted government regulation. For example, the food industry has been secretly reducing the amount of salt in the brands, both because it is better for there customers and to avoid the government requiring the reduction of salt content. But one industry and its followers do everything in their power not do just the opposite. Instead of spending three quarters of a million dollars on political campaigns why doesn't the NRA sponsor gun buy back programs. Instead of jawing about violent videos, why doesn't the NRA sponsor anti-violence education in schools. Instead of the industry pushing the "Tactical gun porn" why not push more responsible gun activities.
But that's not what the NRA or the gun industry is about.
As the interest in hunting decreases every year, the gun industry and their tool the NRA jumped on the para-military ban wagon to boost lagging sales and by promoting gun confiscation paranoia instead of an anti-gun violence message which would have gone a long ways to stave off any type of confiscation or draconian gud law opted instead to line their pockets by promoting that every tom dick and harry had to arm themselves to the teach for the coming armageddon.
Frankly as a gun owner who has joined other sane and responsible gun owners on many a gun forum and have tried to raise this subject only to be banned and have braved the onslaught of insults I know how the gun folks have been rushing toward a show-down. Well now you've got it, and I suggest it again. It's time for sane gun owners to step to the plate and help to devise sane and reasonable gun laws to protect our rights and the safety of our fellow citizens.
A ten round limit on magazine capacity isn't unreasonable.
A limit on the number of handguns that can be purchased each month, isn't unreasonable.
Requiring background checks and FFL's on all gun sales at gun shows, is not unreasonable.
Ending the ban on the National Institute of Health from conducting gun related health issues, isn't unreasonable.
Ending the ban on the ATF from releasing data to researchers of gun violence, isn't unreasonable.
Ending the obstruction of the ATF's ability to shut down gun dealers who are habitually found to be in violation.
End the simple in name only transfer of dealer licenses from one family member to another after a license revocation.
Every regulation isn't part of a slippery slide, sometimes the are a damn before a rising tide or anti-gun sentiment.
The Huffington Post is running a front page article which suggests that in the week since the Sandy Hook shootings, there have been 100 firearm related deaths in the USA. One hundred in a week! And not all these appear to be at the hands of 'crazed gunmen'. Some are accidental, including a child who found a State trooper relative's weapon and was accidentally shot dead! Others were homicides and suicides. I mean, wake up America! What will it take to realise that you have far too many firearms that really aren't needed and that your babies and children are dying beacuse of this obsession? And maybe it's time to revisit your sacrosanct Second Ammendment to the Constitution which seems anachronistic in the 21st century?
47% of American household own guns. That 47% who won't be voting for politicians who try to impose stricter gun laws. Even Obama recognized this and treated gun control as radioactive until he was reelected.
In '94, when the Democrats controlled congress and the presidency, they pushed through an assault rifle ban (as weak as it was.) They promptly lost control of both houses of congress for twelve years, and eventually the presidency also.
Nothing is going to change. They'll be a lot of noise for a little while, then this will drop off the radar.

We have largely unnecessary homeland security against terrorist attacks, but no homeland security from guns for children

Umm, cherry pick which countries to compare to and you can make the statistics say what you want.
Gangs routinely recruit teens younger than 15.
