You act as if "most" people that are entitled to SS are NOT white. Most of the folks turning 62-68 are baby boomers who are overwhelmingly white. Ever look at photos of kids from the 1950s? Looks like a kool-aid kids commercial. Social Security is extremely unfair to men since we typically don't live as long and are on the same actuarial table as women. It's also unfair to single people who die before attaining age since we cannot "will" our lifetime contributions to someone that we designate. It's also unfair to blacks since life mortality is greater for that group. White women, freeloading immigrants, non-working stay at home moms make out like bandits. FDR was an evil POS.

I'm white. I know ss has to be cut. I know my ss will be cut. You'd have to be living under a rock to not realize that the system is not solvent and cannot continue as is. The sooner we start making cuts, the longer the system will last. My, current, retirement plan only includes half of what I'm currently promised in SS because I don't expect to get the full amount and I'm not sure it's safe to include half.

This has nothing to do with race. It has to do with EVERYONE taking cuts in social security so the system can remain afloat.

This is what the GOP wants and I do not trust Obama to stand against them in the end. He has caved to the Republicans too much in the past. So it is really important that all of us call our Congressman and Senators and let them know that we do not want Social Security and Medicare TOUCHED! I called mine already. I did not get him but left a message with his office.
What is happenig is not at all what you state. In fact it was Obama who again offered only cuts in medicare again after cutting it by 500 billion to fund his healthcare law. But in the end one only has to look at SS trustess report or the former breaux(D) commissio to see just what will happen if its not reformed.Remmber its a stand alone law and when funds run olow there will be automatic cuts. Too bad congress has kicked the can down the road on reform ebcause it has only got less sustainable in near future. Without reform to medicvare;SS and medicaid no deficit deal will work because their growth in cost are unsustainable and i time consume most of the federal revenues.

We need reform NOW. I'm far more worried about medicare than SS. I can plan for my living expenses. I can't plan for my medical expenses. If you put 20%/year aside, you save enough to pay for one year of retirement for every 4 you work not counting earnings, assuming medical is taken care of. All bets are off if you face being a senior citizen and having to pay for your own medical. I can't imagine what the premiums would be on an 80 year old...

I think the Republicans have the best plan: screw up Medicare so that people won't live long enough to collect much SS. That kills two birds with one stone.

As for the so-called fiscal cliff, the media never brings up the fact that it will trigger tax increase and spending cuts that are needed to help alleviate the debt problem. Instead, Congress will just keep spending, let the wealthiest Americans keep a majority of their tax cuts, and raise the debt ceiling. The fiscal cliff isn't the worst case scenario, creating more debt is the worst case scenario.

The GOP is leading the charge to cut SS. Obama has caved into their demands and they've settled on cutting benefits by linking COLA increases to chained CPI.

You know nothing, if you think you know SS must be cut. You're a victim of right wing brainwashing. You don't expect to get what you deserve, because you're not willing to stick for yourself. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

They need to cut the useless defense budget first. Why the heck do we have to defend every country in the world? Those other countries don't have to spend a lick on defense and can devote that $$ to the benefit of their citizens. It's unfair that Americans are forced to pay so that other countries' citizens can enjoy their contributions to the system.

I think the only fair way is for the congressman and senators to get the exact same health care and retirement plan that they choose for the rest of us. Then they might care about what they are voting for or against.

Exactly. Social Security is about the same size of the Federal budget as defense spending is. We spend nearly as much on the military as the rest of the World combined, with only 20% of World GDP.
