"Gerald Ford, the 38th President of the United States, was known for most of his life as Gerald "Jerry" Ford. However, Ford was not born with this name. Gerald Ford was born in 1913 as Leslie King Jr., named after his father. Unfortunately, his biological father was abusive and so his mother divorced Leslie King Sr. shortly after Ford's birth. Two years later, Ford's mother met and married Gerald Ford Sr. and Ford's family began to call him Gerald Ford Jr. rather than Leslie King Jr. Although from about age two Ford was known as Gerald Ford Jr., the name change was not made official until December 3, 1935, when Ford was 22 years old."

ETA: Barack Hussein Obama was the legal name that Obama was born with. Somebody else can probably fill in the blanks re: when he was a Soetoro, whether that was a legal name change, and when it was changed back to Obama

Using Obama's step-father's last name was a bone headed attempt at denying him legitimacy.

He was never adopted by his step-father, just as many other Americans were not, but the wing nuts persist in the belief that if, somehow, even with all evidence to the contrary, connecting our President to another name is going to load us all in a time machine and magically transport us back to 2008, where we will get a do-over in the 2008 election and Palin will become the President after John McCain dies in the White House.

No wonder more states are passing legal marijuana laws. All that pot must be being smoked by the birthers. So far, it hasn't mellowed them out much though.

no evidence of a legal name change.

no need to.

bill clinton is another president who used his stepfather's name ( born william jefferson blyth III ). bill used the name clinton for nearly 10 years before legally changing it.

I wasn't aware that the entire right was obsessed with the president's name.

I couldn't care less what his name is, I just wish that he had a shred of competency to do the job.

If Barack Obama were a Republican, a small segment of the left would be obsessed with his name.

Those people will always be around.

Oh, come on! You've been on enough birther threads to have heard all that, about how Lolo Soetoro supposedly legally adopted Obama, etc. One frequent poster even thought Obama was born "Barry Soetoro" and later changed his name to "Barack Obama". Don't play coy.
