The original law in 1965 gave protection for life to Presidents and their spouses. The law was changed in the 1990's to a limit of 10 years. That law was not retroactive. So ONLY Presidents GW Bush and Obama were limited. All other Presidents and their spouses still living had LIFELONG protection.
Well as long as the agent that guards him is unarmed. Or is Obama a hypocrit that believes he needs weapons protecting him but the little people must remain defenseless?
Maybe he's just picking his battles... and he let this one go to the republicans....
No one forced them into being president. They can hire private security.
Ya that will sound good if one gets killed by a wacko. I have no problem if my tax money goes to make sure former presidents of either party are safe the rest of their lives.
Actually, no they don't. They get 10 years. That's it. Obama just changed that.
They USED to get lifetime protection. Congress limited that to 10 years in 1997 for all future presidents. This just restores it to what it was PRIOR to that 1997 change.
Former presidents and their spouses for their lifetimes, except when the spouse remarries. In 1997, Congressional legislation became effective limiting Secret Service protection to former presidents for a period of not more than 10 years from the date the former president leaves office
And while Obama signed the Act into law, it was sponsored by a South Carolina Republican, Trey Gowdy, and enjoyed strong bipartisan support, including unanimous consent in the Senate.
The bill was introduced in the House of Representatives in November 2012 by South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy, and passed by voice vote in early December, according to BuzzFeed. Co-sponsors included Republican Lamar Smith, and Democrats John Conyers and Bobby Scott. The Senate passed the bill by unanimous consent on Dec. 28, and sent over to the White House on New Year's Day.[LEFT]
