Former presidents should have protection for as long as they want unless they decide otherwise.

Given the level of hatred and rage directed at Barack Obama, he'd have to be insane to ditch the secret service protection after his term expires. It's only a matter of time until some extremist nutjob who currently spends all day every day watching hate TV, listening to hate radio, and posting anti-Obama topics online grabs a gun and starts shooting.

If there is any president who should have protection, it would be this one. Lincoln probably comes in a close second, followed by JFK. At the bottom of the list would be Jackson--people need protection from him!
