With the gun-related posts in this forum approaching the one billion mark, I'm kind of surprised that no one has any thoughts about smart guns.

I think that would be fine if someone wanted to pay extra for one, but I would be opposed to any law that mandated it...

If I need to use a gun in defense I need that gun to be 100% reliable....

It was an idea dreamed up and worked on (by S&W IIRC) back in the early 90s. One idea was that the owner would wear a coded ring with an RFID code in it that would be scanned by electronics on the gun.

Lets start out by issuing them to the cops. They spend more time in close proximity to criminals and have a greater incidence of having their guns taken and used against them than do civilians. Once they are proven out there, we can offer them to the public.
