If they would just dump the far right kooks who say global warming is not real and that science that does not agree with the bible is wrong, I would take a look at them again. I am for guns and our gun rights. But the far right Christian nut jobs who want to make abortion illegal and put their god in schools, and stop people from marrying who they want, make me walk away. Stop the crazy and you can win.

Did you vote for Romney? He is about as middle of the road as you could have gotten from either party.

I can't see how anyone could for Romney, no one knew where he actually stood on any issue.

People who voted for Romney were also voting for the whole smörgåsbord of crazies to whom he had to pander. That's always the case with voting for the President.

I couldn't stomach voting for Obama again for partly the same reason--although I found the Dem crazies less frightening than the creationist and other rabble.

The religious right is a huge part of the base. Hell, it IS the base.

That said, those people need a party too. The Republican Party can juggle those people AND keep the moderates too. Reagan did it, and did so easily.

The thing is, the Republican Party has a small window of time in which to win back the moderates, and it's quite doable if they want to do it. Who says that you can't appease the moderates and the religious right contemporaneously without alienating either group? They don't have to be mutually exclusive.

Judging from most of the Republicans i see on C-D, they seem to think that you can only have one or the other, which points to the party being too far to the right at this point.

Using derisive terms like 'RINO' doesn't help. Republicans need to quit forgetting that RINOS vote Republican at the end of the day, and that they're an important part of the coalition if you're getting their votes. Reagan understood that.

That's the other thing; stop invoking Reagan's name unless you're actually willing to run the party the way it was ran coterminously with the Reagan Administration.

How is it that you would vote for the GOP if it dumped Christians when you're not considering dumping Democrats for unchecked spending, abortion, wedlock, and welfare?

You're saying that the Christian Right has more effect on your psyche than seeing your tax dollars spent on social programs that only perpetuate society's ills?

I call bull****. Or just plain apathy, ignorance, and narrow-mindedness.

Exactly, thats the problem with being stuck in the middle of the road, you get run over.

The Republican party lost independent libertarian minded people didn't turn out to vote. By some counts about 10 million. Romney didn't appeal to them. Obama lost millions of Indies from 2008 to 2012. Its the elephant in the room most on either side don't talk about in public. It's why Obama didn't push many policies he is pushing now. Especially the Democrats.

I wouldn't hold your breath OP, lol. I agree with you for the most part, dump the religious fanatics and quit kissing the very wealthy's as$ and they could get a lot more votes, maybe even win. Until they get more members of the party that think this way, it won't happen though

Problem with the GOP is that they can't win elections without the Christian Right, they also can't seem win with them . Catch 22
