It is a real possibility that those two could go to war in the near future. That would put America in a bind because we have a treaty with Japan(defense treaty) but we need China to help finance our entitlement programs. So what do we do? We have to side with Japan or be the biggest traitors in history. Its scary.

If China and Japan go to war, then the United States would be bound by the terms of the Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty of 1961 [pdf] to "act to meet the common danger". However, the only specific action provided for in the treaty is that such attack "shall be immediately reported to the Security Council of the United Nations". And of course, since the PRC has a permanent seat and veto in the Security Council, it's very likely that the Security Council would do nothing at all.

In practice, though, we're back to MAD.

This is interesting as I saw on NHK news Chinese war ships have been activating targeting radar at Japanese ships and aircraft. If they go to war, again, we will side with the Japanese, this time. Won't that be interesting? Of course by then we'll all be in the upper atmosphere.

The Chinese and Japanese don't like each other but why would they go to war? It's more likely China would try and forcefully annex part of Russia.

Chinese Japanese war would most likely start a Global war.

China attacks Japan , Japan fires back, North Korea makes a threat, South Korea doesnt take it likely and fires preemptive strikes, China attacks South Korea, US attacks China, China attacks US, ROC attacks China directly, NATO attacks China directly.

Russia isnt stupid, its a lose lose, They will be neutral.

your chain of events makes no sense. why would china attack japan?

also, china attacking south korea? that makes even less sense. the two are well on their way to being allies. also, the reason some chinese hate japan (wwii) ... south koreans have the same hatred of japan in case you haven't noticed. they would NEVER side with japan on that issue.

china gains nothing by starting a war, especially in the near term. it's not going to happen.

the world is a lot more interconnected than it was in the 1930s/1940s. international trade is what has stopped these big useless wars, and is what will prevent them in the future.

China and Japan have been saber-rattling over the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands for months now. A 'hot' war over those little uninhibited specks is a real (if tragically ridiculous) possibility. Neither side wants to lose face.
