These people were already blocked under the old system. It also depends upon what state one is living. It also was a stop-gap measure, as the the linked article clearly states:

The program, which was launched in summer 2010, was always intended as a temporary bridge for the uninsured. But it was supposed to last until 2014. At that point, the health-care law will bar insurers from rejecting or otherwise discriminating against people who are already sick, enabling such people to buy plans through the private market.
What it shows, in addition, is that ObamaCare, which encourages early intervention is a good idea that lowers expensive care by treating ailments before they become worse:

Many people who are uninsured go untreated, exacerbating their medical problems. When they finally do get coverage through a high-risk pool, they are in immediate need of expensive care.
I saw that this morning. What they neglected to tell you is that some states ran out of money last year.
I posted a thread on this with several linked articles.
And the premiums were just as high as private insurance for pre-existing so many who couldn't afford private insurance also couldn't afford this.
But they will get into the pool on 10/1 and their premiums will then be subsidized by tax dollars, up to 95% so they'll be covered in a few months.
Oh and another thing this article neglected to mention is that the pools costs are running twice the national average for the same cost via private insurance.
Yeah..can't wait for Obamacare to kick in 1/2014.
If these 2 years of the high risk pool is any indication of the full blown version for everyone then we're in for one bumpy ride.

Nope, only if they did not have insurance within the last 6 months....the article clearly states that....

Really? The article also clearly states that they were charging premium prices....

Initial fears that as many as 375,000 sick people would swamp the pools and bankrupt them by 2012 did not pan out. This is largely because, even though the pools must charge premiums comparable to those for healthy people, the plans sold through them are often expensive.
Either way, stop gap or not, people will not have insurance, I thought that was the entire obama care was about?
I wonder when people will wake up to the fact that government programs always go broke.
Unlike private systems and companies?
But it isn't even true.
However, if you bothered to read the article, you would know that the program was supposed to be a bridge from 2010 to 2014 until ObamaCare went into effect and Congress had no idea how much money to provide for this. So, it ended up coming up short by 9 months. That's hardly an indictment of all government programs and says nothing about the viability of ObamaCare.

It is, and will, when ObamaCare takes effect in 2014. Until then we have to live with the vestiges of the old system, which essentially this thread is complaining about.

Sorry..the CBO had all the figures.
Had no idea ? All those studies and estimates and MSM blathering about how they would REDUCE costs.
They hired actuaries to estimate costs.
I guess those actuaries forgot that the government was running it and they should have just doubled their estimate for the government fudge factor.
The financial fiasco you see now is what we will see nationwide come next year.
