The natural consequence of not having marriage for gay people and their partners.

Want to fix the problem, extend marriage equality and *magic* no problem!

I understand why people who identify as being gay feel it necessary to share their lifestyle concerns with others. The OP wishes to be treated fairly, in his eyes.

This.

Don't like it? Stop denying civil marriage rights and the problem will go away. The DoD is trying to do what it can to ensure fair treatment within the law as it currently exists.

This is actually what gay marriage opponents want. They want to prevent gays from being able to marry, but agree they should not be denied the benefits.

Nah. It seems many of them actually do want to deny the benefits. Only very recently (after looking at the shifting political winds and realizing how unpopular being a bigot is) have they started to accept the idea that gay couples should receive any of the benefits/responsibilities at all.

Just take a look at the Texas GOP platform to see where many of the anti-equality people are at - no marriage, no domestic partnerships, no recognition whatsoever. Their 2012 platform did finally get rid of their wish to ban sodomy again.
