What's It Like to Wake Up From a Tea Party Binge? Just Ask Florida! | Mother Jones

"They've rejected billions in federal funds in one of the states hardest hit by the recession. They've axed everything from health care and public transportation initiatives to mosquito control and water supply programs."

This is what happens when right wing extremists take over. Especially sad is the loss of the Tampa-Orlando rail link. What utter insanity. It would have been a boon for the whole corridor including Tampa, Orlando, Lakeland and small towns in between.

"the Tampa Tribune discovered that Scott's own transportation department had projected that the train would turn a profit.) Scott sent $2.4 billion back to Washington, a decision that one of Florida's Republican members of Congress, John Mica, said "defies logic."

I'm more of a middle man myself. I think it was the wrong decision to reject the HSR funds. At the same time I think it was a great decision to require people on welfare to submit drug tests.

Disclaimer: I voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012

I'm not a fan of the tea party. But the thing I wonder about is why do people from blue states who bash and don't like Republicans keep moving South to where Republicans are? It's not just Florida you can add: Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina to the popular places to move too list. Republicans must be doing something right if more people (and business) keep moving South.

When it comes to making money and business I'm with Republicans.
When it comes to social issues for the most part I'm with Democrats.

It's the same on both sides. There are many Republicans moving to San Francisco and complaining about taxes etc (yet they don't complain about their much higher salaries).

Florida isn't a Republican state either. It's pretty dead center. Texas is also going into California trying to steal businesses as well.

Nevada's economy has been in the pits for a decade and it's no income tax hasn't helped it the past decade either.

I don't want to start a political debate here, but I just wanted to balance things out. I'm with you on your last point... I prefer Republicans when it comes to business policy and Democrats when it comes to social issues. Both parties are spenders though, one just taxes and spends, while the other just borrows and spends.

If we stay separate, it remains separate....pretty simple logic.

This is 90% of the "working" people I know, including myself. I like the Libertarian movement.

Yeah, just look to California and how successful they've been with their money and spending.

The Tea Party and Republicans are two completely separate groups. I feel the same way when it comes to finances and social issues, however, morally and religiously I'm conservative. Most in the Tea Party are kinda nuts and most Republicans try to distance themselves from it.

People are moving to Texas because the business climate is friendly, the economy is strong (statewide unemployment is below 6%) and the taxes and cost of living are very low. I assume that most moving to Florida are doing so for the weather or for retirement.
