I'm far more interested in the unoffical unemployment rate, which also covers underemployment. Recently, here in Las Vegas, despite the current "booming economy", we're still pegged at an unofficial rate of 20%+!
Not far behind Greece or Spain!
Let's jump ahead 5-10 years! Anyone dare to do that?
The sad thing is that the people who are not unemployed in those countries have a much, much better average quality of work and life than their employed counterparts here. So in 5-10 years our unemployment will be similar, yet the employed people here will be much worse off.
RussiaToday could have perhaps looked in a mirror.
Murder Rate: Russia 10.2, USA 4.8
Per Capita Income: Russia $12,993, USA $48,328
Elections: Putin wins with 101% of the vote...
They only compare OECD countries so Russia is out. It'd be interesting to see how they reach some of their conclusions but undoubtedly some points are true:
USA has highest prison population
Has less Media freedom than other OECD countries
All of which we need to address instead of pointing to Russia.
I was very disappointing the last time I went to the south. I thought he south was all about freedom and anti-government. When I was in Alabama I felt like I tripped into a character in Orwell's 1984. It was like a surveillance station at every street corner. Oh yeah, but I couldn't buy a lottery ticket because "we don't do that lottery down here, we do fishing and hunting."
Well they actually do the lottery down here. Every Southern state except Alabama and Mississippi has the lottery.
The US is typically raked 4th on the Human Development Index. We have great wealth and great freedoms when compared to the rest of the world. Yes we have serious problems...so do other countries.

The nice thing about this country is we can CHOOSE to live in the South or the North or the West, etc.
It is a lot easier for those living along the coast to choose to move to the mid-western States, than it is for those in the mid-western States to choose to move to the coast (any coast). Both Los Angeles and New York are much more expensive than Omaha, Minneapolis/St. Paul, or Chicago. The cost of living reflects the salary most people are paid, so a family of four making $120K in Des Moines, Iowa, is living well, but in LA or NYC they may be just getting by.
I have, and I never want to go again. Like I mentioned on the first page, the biggest dumps in the nation are in the bright red deep south.
Try looking around your neighborhood.
